Gents - I am fishing out of Hartlepool on 20 September on NorthStar. Will bring the normal array of shads, sidewinders, rippers, muppets, hokkais etc. Will also bring some Macky and squid.

However - whats been working well recently? Would appreciate any advice so I can start off on the most likely option and then go from there depending on how the day goes.

Thanks

Just dont expect Stockton ASDA to have any in :)

Pink always seems to work well for me aboard NorthStar. Good luck

Cooked in their shells. I was dubious when I first heard about it, but yes it works.

If you fancy a big 9lb Pollock, bait up, send it to the bottom and go to the loo, when you come out your mate will be hauling it in on your rod. Works a treat for Steve!! :D

Cooked whole prawns (about 1 inch long) - £4 from ASDA...expensive but they do seem to work, 1 bag will do for the day if your bringing additional baits

And yes, stick them on your trace hooks

Dont worry about it though mate, Jim will keep you right and the regulars are good lads you will be well advised much like I was being very much a novice from the boat.

Stockton asda never has them in Liam, went to Hartlepool got two bags and they charged £8, Norman got me two bags a couple days later and they charged him £7.

Don’t take offense mate lol, I have noticed sometimes they are 2 for £7 on special Norman must just have caught them on the specials day.

Mind you, if you ever go into an ASDA with a fish counter and catch the fish monger clearing up for the day around 5 they will massively discount anything on the ice shelf if you ask as they would throw them out anyway. They lady at Peterlee ASDA does but obviously this does not include the freezer stuff/prawns… but good for cheap fresh macky and muscle bait or even if you fancy some fish.

Hit and miss now i'd imagine James, defo take a box of squid just incase. Quaility cheap squid at the tackle shop Friarage right next to the dock - my favorite for squid bait.

Hope it goes well - try and stand next to Stevie hes on fire ;)

Looks like the forecast is deteriorating for saturday......when it was perfect!

Hope to still get out, but not sure.

Any views on the saturday forecast?

As it stands, you have to hope that the forecasts are wrong...

I think there still is a good chance that the NE front is arriving late on Saturday.

Its Wednesday only and I believe its terribly difficult to predict the Saturday already. Anything can happen. Most skippers (commercial or private) will only decide as late as they can, which is for charters usually the evening before.

I once was out mid-September in a similar forecast...we had a lovely calm morning and the weather turned absolutely horrific later on. Before the wind and rain started, we caught ourselves stupid on ling and cod---good luck

On a private boat, we sometimes can venture out either very early, or very late, or just for a short tidal/weather window, whereas most charters run a 7-17 service.

My opinion: If Saturdays front only arrives in the afternoon, the tidal size, tide times and season look very promising and could really work well on the grounds and wrecks.

Looks alright James at the moment, might get a bit naughty later on but the majority of the day looks alright - you should have a nice haul :)

I have everything crossed. My gear is packed!
Thinking i will try rippers and killer rigs first (hokkais, muppets or string of jellys), then go from there - perhaps try some sides of macky for ling or maybe a shad on a flying collar for cod.
