Tweeddale

Fished Tweeddale today under very trying conditions, most of the morning was bright sunshine and no breeze on the water, offered a multitude of patterns with very little success.
Cloud cover came late in the afternoon and fish started to show on the surface, caught a couple on CDC patterns and a couple on Buzzers, best fish about 5 to 6LBS.
Bit of a suntan in the morning, a few fish in the afternoon, LOVERLY.

Hi Mick, in my limited knowledge, CDC is an abreviation of the French word relating to the preen gland of a ducks rear end. Once again, in my humble opinion, the preen gland is the "oil source" and it is this that makes the rear end feathers very collectable for tying flies that will float on the waters surface.
These feathers are used in a multitude of patterns and are excellant when trout are topping and tailing the water. The body of the fly is made from seals fur or similar material, the cdc holds the fly on the surface making your fishing very visual, great fun when the fish are on.
I'm sure more knowledgable anglers on this site can give you a more accurate assessment of a CDC but I hope my atttempted explanation may help.

Cheers seddo

couldent explain it better seddo one of the fisheries i keep going to visit but have never got to will have to give it a bash how long does it take to get there.

Spot on with CDC description,
I'm off to Tweedale myself on Friday, bad forecast for the wind though,
from Ashington it takes just over an hour & half.

John.

Hi Fishman, I reckon it will take you somewhere in the region of 2 1/2 hrs from Gateshead, Having said that , I am an old fart when it comes to driving so it may just take you a couple of hours.

Callaghan 48, if you intend going up on Friday try using a black buzzer with a silver rib, plain black head, try a range of sizes from 14 upto 10.
There is an old guy who fish's there twice a week and he always catch's fish on this pattern.
It is going to be very windy on Friday, if I may suggest, log onto www.xcweather.co.uk then the link to GB Wind Map and this gives you the wind conditions for the whole week, it also breaks down the wind strength every hour or so.

cheers lads

cdc = cul de canard which translates literally from french as ducks's arse!!

and spot on with the description, small downy little feathers that are almost unsinkable. often parachute style for dry flies or added to the body of wets to make them bouyant underwater. No single cdc pattern, its just a material that can be added into many different flies

loads of cdc patterns on here: http://www.flytyingworld.com/flyindex.shtml

Loads of information on that web site Mark.
Cheers for the info, will have a try at some of the patterns.

Seddo you must be reading my mind, i have been tying some of these today,
took five Rainbows on our private lake yesterday, i fish these's on a Cortland camo intermediate and they work very well with a slow retrieve, hackle makes all the difference.

LOL don't thank me, I only found that site last week when Hiram A biff put the link in another thread!!

CDC's Don't gink them up though, it knackers them. It's almost always the first dry I try if it's not obvious what they're feeding on as they are so easy to fish. I love ducks' greasy bum fluff flies.

Gink?? Gink??

whats wrong with earwax?? works a treat, honest it really does, and I reckon the odour is a dead cert fish attractant

Callaghan 48,

I caught one of my rainbows on something like that fly. Cost 75p from the shop at Derwent.
Re the ducks feathers,my staffie bitch who i walk most evenings down Allensford has been chasing a Mallard and a drake for ages. She will never catch them cos she can,t swim fast enough, but if she hits lucky i,ll keep the feathers.
On the other hand i,ll see if i can buy some and give em a whirl. I know they are no good in bright sunshine as the fish can be blinded. I,ll keep them in the old box.
PS Just been watching Matt Hayes on tv. Was using a trout rod and reel fishing for trout and the odd pike from a boat. He used a big home made feather thing which resembled a small fish in the water. And he caught a pike.

Hi Jamcod, Sheppie caught 4 after pinching my flies and stealing my water.:D :D
Ronnie, our other marra blanked but he lost a monster of a fish, it was on for age's, never showed, then snapped his line as if it was a piece of thread.
I hope it is slill kicking around for our next visit.;)

Back from Tweeddale, hard work with the wind strong south westerly.
Managed two good fish but made to work hard for them, 4lb Rainbow on my straggle Damsel & 7lb Rainbow on black buzzer with the hackle.

The wind is a bit of a sod up there but it looks as if it was worth the travel.
Roll on a fortnights time for my next trip.
