Hello, I\'m new to the forums, and would just like to say what a canny site, full of usefull information.
Anyhow, I was fishing Roker Pier on Saturday, my mate caught a fish, which neither of us were to sure what it was, I was adamint it was a Monk Fish, but he wasn\'t convinced, a second opinion would be much appreciated!

Yep, Scorpion Fish. Your mate was right not to be convinced. Very painful if you\'re unfortunate enough to get stuck on one of the spines.

Hi SAJ , welcome to NESA yes it is a spiny sea scorpion , they will be around till late autumn, so mind the fingers.

short spined sea scorpion, spikey but def not poisonous, also called a granny fish or looking at this one the al jolson fish!!

board at work so did a little surf digging.
scentific name: tauruius bubalis
common name: long/short spined bullhead among others
book name: sea toadfish, rout, bullfish
family: cottidae.
unlike its family abroad it is not poisionus but is the 3rd/4th most dangerous creature you could come accross in the maldives.
i has also been said it can change its colour to suit its conditions, mine was red from the kelp up craster way and the one in the pic is grey from the dull waters down roker way.
it has also been said that that changing its colour could take from as little as a couple of days.
thats it for now back to do some proper work lol

cheers
