just bought vhf radio will i need to register with coast gaurd so they no who i am if i need them

you don't 'need' to, but its wise to do so. 2 things to do, the cg66 - HM Coastguard - CG66

and you'll need a licence for the boat, which is free if done online at

once registered/licenced there they'll also issue you with an MMSI number, so if you've got an DSC radio, pressing the distress button in an emergency, automatically transmits your position and MMSI number so they know who you are and where you are
