Weak rods !

Does anyone know if whipping tiplights or using reflective tape weakens the construction and material of your rod ? Fairly sure I read an article in a mag or maybe on here that whipped on tiplights can cause problems.

Dunno about whipped on tiplights alan, but I just tend to use white tape and have had no problems. If its pitch black with no street lighting around, I just sellotape a starlight onto my tip - had no bother with those either.

Old Red Eye Breakaway brand Rod Tip Night Light. Fitting Instructions: Without mount, use insulation tape. Make sure pole tip is dry. Tape 2 turns around the pole, position light pointing to handle, continue taping 3 turns. With the mount, fixing on slide mount with thread and glue or lacquer. Make sure that the mount has open end down. To replace bateries, remove back plate and replae old batteries with battery type 675 size or equivalent.

i was told that glueing or whipping the Attachment on your rod tip creates a \"weak area \" when under stress (fish on maybe ,more probably snagged in my case) because it alters the action of the rod ,it can also catch your line when casting. prefer Solas tape which is fitted by many a reputable rod builder ,so i reckon it must be ok

cant really see a tip light causing a weak spot its such a small area and the light holder is plastic so will flex anyway,tape would be the same i asume ,it still allows the rod to flex,now if you added a splint creating rigididityty(stiffness) that might be a problem.ive tip lights on all 3 of mine and apart from the odd line snag no problems

The only way I could see there being a problem would be through the use of glues or solvents (not for sniffing). This could cause a problem but surely not whipping or taping them on.

My thinking is that taping or whipping on a tip light would not cause any depremental effects to your beachcaster, surely its no different to the whipping used on your rod eyes.
As for glueing, cannot see a problem there either, your rod should have a layer of high build-up gloss laquer on it and the adhesive, no matter what it is (superglue to araldite) should not be a prob.
As for getting snagged up on it during a chuck,,,, sorry boys cannot help there, but it would be wise to make sure it was only a semi permenant fixture or you could loose the end of your rod.

I don\'t think relective tape makes a difference but those whip on mounts creates a flat spot when your rod is at full curve. I know it sounds daft but when your rods right on the edge it could mean the diffrence between snap and no snap.

as for getting snagged during the chuck

i always let about 6 inches of line run through my tip eye before casting so i know its free anyway
