Soz for the delay in this post: Well today was to be my first boat trip of this year or so I thought, sadly yesterday afternoon it was cancelled due to the weather. Now then decisions, decisions, I’d allready purchased some rag and lug and had lots of other choices of bait in the freezer so the only decision to make was where to go. For some unknown reason I travelled south to Teesside area, had a look at the beach at North Gare but it appeared too open and exposed to the elements of today and so I opted for Middleton Pier. There was one lonely sole at the end of the pier; by now it was 12.30 and he said he had been there since about 11am without a bight. 3 hook flappers were the order of the day size 1 hooks, and a strong cast into a headwind which at times must have been raging 20mph. I could anly get my rigs to land about 50yds. Another brave individual joined us on the pier having cycled from Stockton – couldn’t believe it cycling all that way in such conditions. Not long into the session I caught a 20cm rockling – well at least today wasn’t to be a blank. I thought it may have been the start of things to come but alas not. I percevered through wind, rain and hail, yes it was hailstoning!! Like bloody frozen peas bombarding me. Nothing else gave themselves up, and even if they had I wouldn’t have seen the bights in these conditions. About 3.40pm my two comrades desterted me, they were wet through and the weather had got the better of them. I soldered – I’d tried lug, rag, squid mussel, mackeral in vaious cocktails – all to no avail. I then thought I needed to pull something magic out of my box of tricks to get these fishes to give themselves up, so I searched deep down and pulled from the box of tricks a magic glow worm – illuminous !! On it went and out the rig sailed into the prevailing wind and hail landing only about 45yds away. Within two minutes the rod nodded unbelieveably, such an obvious bight. The result a small 20cm dab. Hey ho at least it brought a smile to my face. I was then joined by another adventurous sole who braved the conditions. After that result I put glow worm on all 3 hooks but it just wasn’t to be. By 5.45pm I’d had enough the elements had beaten me; My feet were soaked through and my face was scorched with the wind and rain. I retreated and left my comrade alone on the end of the pier the weather continuing to close in. Half way along the pier I looked back to see the dark sillouette of the lone fisherman appearing like Grace Darling on the wall above a stormy sea, poor sod I thought, head down I struggled back to my car, 45mins later got home to a red hot shower and a plate of curry to warm me through finnished off with a cool bottle of bud. “That’s Fishing” Sadly the glow worm doesn't count in the lure challenge b'cos I had some rag on the hook also.!!:-(
