catch a fish or even 2 at a time take them off cast another bait out unhook the the fish you just caught weigh them then throw them over the pier wall which is a canny drop?

I think I'd just be concentating on getting the fish in question back in the water ASAP and with the shortest drop possible, seems thoughtless and ignorant to me. F***in h**l a minute aint gona make much difference to the final catch weight.

If I caught 2 Fish at once, id probably pack up and head straight to the club to brag, abou my marvellous days fishing!!! HAHA.

i agree we should respect our catch and get it back to the water asap not like a certain club i,ll not mention i was seething thinking they are our future fish i,m normally one for speaking my mind but i get in to much trouble without going fishing and if i ended up scrapping again i,ll have to face the wrath of my wife lol

Or the cops mate

Is this as club members or for pleasure fishermen too.? I would class myself as a pleasure fisher, as I don't have the experience or want the weight on my shoulders of having to catch to weigh in for a club.

To answer the question IMHO it depends what size fish, what species etc whether or not it's for the table. If it's undersize it goes back, if it's un-edible type fish it goes back no matter what, sorry to any C&R people reading but each to there own.

i i,ve had my hands tied buy the old bill a few times but my lovely wife is worse as she,ll stop me fishing altogether can,t have that, but weve got the sport from the fish we catch whether it size or not or for the table our quarry should be treat with respect and get it back in the water asap not slung over the pier to get its head slapped they are our kids and our future fish could grow into bigguns all for points and pennys if the anti brigade where thier watching filming etc.. they would have a field day as though we do,nt get enough crap but i can tell by the replies that nobody really cares or are frightened to voice thier opinions shut up and put up just my opinion rant over

some piers have steps close to where they fishing surely they can be returned safe that way "NO" its time comsuming they must get that next rig on ASAP they have prepaired before hand and straight out for a chance of winning ,surely a bucket of water if its undersize they can hoy it in there for a few minutes while sorting the next cast and while waiting for next bite return the fish seen lads lower fish down heights on there grip wire to return them ;)

Treat everything with respect as always mate I don't quite get you're question, but I will say that no matter what you, me or jack horner does it won't stop the next muppet doing the opposite.

You can be the best driver on the road and feel untouchable, ie you won't ever have an accident, maybe you won't but that doesn't stop someone else driving like a maniac and crashing into you. Think I am rambling BS now lol.

This is actually a really good question. Many times I have fished on piers and caught sized, or undersized codling, coalies and bass - even from the shoreline. If the fish are gut hooked or simply will not survive the throw back I keep them - even if they are undersize and use them in a fish pie. I'd rather use the fish than claim a hollow moral 'victory' by putting it back for the gulls and crabs.

think the key point here is these guys are experienced match anglers who know how fish should be returned there not kids or macky bashers were ignorence can be used as a poor excuse, is it bravado/arrogence or only winning that matters?good thread mate

i thought if you are doing catch and release you get the fish back in the water asap with as little harm and stress as possible.:)

lets compare if you did what you mentioned in the opening thread in a course fishing match on lake, pond or river i expect you would be disqualified from the competition and asked to leave the water and banned from future matches.:o

A tip i was shown is if you catch small codlings and dont want to drop them incase the fall kills it is to put one of the lead grip wires under the chin, (the place where you would chin lift a big fish) becareful of the gills and lower the fish down slowly on your lead with your rod into the water and watch it swim away.:D

this is all very good in princable but as i fish blyth pier a lot there is no safe way to get to water level other than walk the full length of the pier on to the shore so putting them off the pier in the safest possible way i can is the only option for me mate ie making sure they dont hit the structure and trying as best as possible to get them to go head first like a dive. Theres no way i would be casting out again until the fish are dealt with tho by either dispatching them for the table or safe release. To be honest mate i do lose the odd fish that doesnt recover but not many.

Yer, for example, shields pier, when I get a fish from the seaward side I always return it on the river side. Lower drop so less trauma for the fish.

i think every experienced angler tries to safely release unless theyre morons gordon but its not always the case tho mate. You cant save em all. After all it is a form of hunting and i know there is idiots out there who will just waste fish i like to think that most ppl try there best mate. But if i do get the odd floater after release im hardly gonna break me heart about it. Ya try ya best an thats all ya can do and if ppl dont agree they shouldnt use hooks and just go an catch stikklebacks out of theyre nearest pond with a kiddie net or something. Sorry if this offends but the poster asked for my opinion so there it is. I'll also add that out of the fish ive caught over these summer months that ive lost 2 fish that have floated. But id say that over 50 have swam away safely. The poster of this thread is right but like i say ...... Not always possible

tatally agree with you mate

Fish Fingers, i can see your point however you are very unlikely to get anyone on here to support casting out before realeasing the fish that has just been caught, as you will already know anything even remotely contoversial posted on here usually ends up in handbags at dawn.

Personally i dont fish matches (apart from a few nesa comps in the past) and i would guess that match fishermen are mainly the people likely to do what you have described. I fish for the pleasure of it, i dont even eat any sea food so its very rare for me to keep fish and in my opinion seeing them swim away is one of the best bits of fishing. Maybe a topic on the best ways to safely return fish from a height would be good?

A pont to note is that you will be suprised how many of the chavs/macky bashers/inbreds who swarm our peirs at this time of year actually know of this site and check to ''see if the macky are in'' so sometimes they do read threads like this and even if one of those learns a bit more about releasing a fish safely then it can only be a good thing (i know its a long shot but all you can do is hope).

Shouldn't we make a chav thread then to let them know you can't release macky after handling them,? well you can but as soon they handle the fish it basically kills them. They need to flick the fish off the hook, but as most know a chav will catch a macky sized or undersize, it's just a macky to most of them, and let it dry out in the sun.
