Whats the best bait fo COD.

So, the ultimate Cod bait is : 2 peelers, 2 mussels, 3 Black Lug, 1 White Rag and tipped off with 1 King Rag, 1 Calamari and a Hermit.

Should be able to manage to cast that five or six yards....if I re-mortgage the house first:D

all winter cod or codling ive took has been on lug rag cocktail
or runnydown and rag cocktail
i have took cod on runnydown and squid before but i like to use worm baits
runnydown is verry underated so is mussel
i prefere to use peeler during summer for codling ect or early autum
just my oppinion

Since I've started using crab a lot more I've noticed that I'm not catching as much. Defo going back to lug/muscle baits as this has always worked best for me.

Definatly worm based baits during the winter months, and when the water is dirty i ilike to have a worm/ mussel cocktail.

Cod baits

In the summer and early season it has to be peeler or crab and squid wrap for me. Untill about October time i use this but when the big seas come away i change to Razor, Squid, Blacks, Rag and Mussel. Interestingly most of the early fish from Pools came on squid or razor and worm couldnt get a look in. But over the last two three weeks it has switched to worm baits again and mackerel has been taking a lot of good fish! Last time out i had a couple on big cocktails of squid and lug, didnt even get a bite on razor. When i gutted these fish though all there stummochs contained was hard back crabs and nothing else which was unusual. I cant work it out at the moment really so to be safe i take squid, razor, runnydown, rag, mussel and mackerel to cover all situations and will try different combinations till i get fish (hopefully).

When it's flat, Peeler, Mussell and runny down cocktail on the hook and 4-5 juicy lug above (if I've managed to get enough). When it's rough Squid and runny down cocktail with 4-5 lug above.Managed to accquire 2 good white rag this weekend tho instead of mussell with the crab and had 100 % success in 3 casts!
Another curious thing. I had a freezer full of mackeral and thought I'd experiment with rubby dubby. Got to my mark and cut 4 fillets into 1 inch cubes and chucked into the mountainous sea. Two of the fish I caught, when gutted had a cube of mackeral inside.
I tried in my early years fishing with mackeral, with little or no success in the winter from the shore. My opinion is, If there are fish there and they're on the feed, they'll eat owt

Hoovers?

Hoovers?

Perhaps you are right there and its the cod actually been there and not the bait which is important. I know its different but in Norway in the shallow clear water you could see them attacking smaller coalfish and they were straight onto the prik without inspecting it. I know this is a different type of feeding, but the speed at which they attacked the pirk suggests they may not be so picky about choosing there next meal?

I would love to put a peeler crab on but they are like rocking horse s--t.
I use squid and rag as main bait.
I have also been using frozen runny, razer combos. I think cod are like you say hoovers if its there they will eat it.
But sometimes when i,m not catching and other people are i think wish i had some peeler.

Mick.
