when do the cod leave?

i'm fairly new to the cod fishing malarky only seriously gave it a go this winter. and had a good fish of 4.6lb (yes im still chuffed) but iv got a book that says they buggar off round about next month. how much truth is in this because iv heard people talking about spring runs etc (i know about kelpys) and seen pics people pulling in 3lbers out smiths in mid summer (parkys pics i think). so what is it, do they stay or do they go? or is it just small codling that stay behind in the river.

they dont leave, but they do move a little further off.

theres actually more cod off our coast in the warmer months.

in summer the boats can fill up on cod that are at times only 1/4 mile off shore.

it only needs a bit of movement for some fish to move in.

most dont fish for cod in summer prefering to chase other species, but they are still there.

I find that in amognst te kelpy rocks that the fish tends to be colonised where a small number of fish tend to stay and its down to being in the right spot at the right time
There is also alot of cod taken in the summer months over the wrecks to where ive had 20+ fish in 1 day all cod and ling

The winter months you tend to find codling stay off shore untill there is some movement in the water to push them inshore and its being there again when this does happen
In the summer its best to fish lighter for other species as its not always gonna be that lunker were all dreaming of theres alot of coalies whitey pollock wrasse dabs and plaice to target

Aye fish for outer fish in summer wen water alot clear and cod in winta going to target bass this summa do lot ov spinning if ya fancy it sam bud ?

They never really leave as such, they just move offshore a tad. But you still get summer cod or kelpies. Its well worth targeting them in summer, the rewards can be rather fruitful

when theres a good stir during the warmer months as long as it colours the water, the cod will turn up.

ive had some good session in hartlepool during july and august.

one session i had 4 fish to 6lb in daylight [august] while those around me feathered in dirty water for mackerel

the 'spring run' coincides with the crab moult, so codling head into the estuaries.
so, if it stays mild, look forward to great april
some large doubles have been caught in the tyne during these periods!

they dont leave as such they come in close to land when the sea is cooler and the rough sea brings thier prey out of thier hiding place

as has already been said mate. i cant understand why people dont fish for cod in the summer months. i love fishing the weed for them and you get some cracking bags and fish.

the only difference being you can feel your outer extremties which is nice

sweet cheers for the replies guys, so if theres a good n/s easterly churn up it might be worth chuckin out a big bait in the usual winter marks. or settled sunny for a kelpy if im right. cant wait to give the rocks a blast in glorious sunshine (if we bloody get any)! oh well good to hear bout that spring run so there's still always a chance of a good fish in the river (my usual haunt) in the spring. , is that weather dependant or regardless if the crabs are peeling?
