Where to fish, April 14-18?

Hi guys,

I'm staying in Lesbury from April 14th - 18th with the family. My better half has told me that I can go fishing one or two evenings - result!

So, I'm looking for suggestions as to where to fish.

Can anyone give me a few ideas?

Thanks,

R.

Hi Robin and welcome to NESA. If you fancy trying your hand at catching a few flatfish you could try Alnmouth. Very close to where you are staying and easy access from the car park to the beach, just follow the signs for the golf club and across it to the beach.

I expect the sea should still be flat over the next few days and if it is you could give Craster a try for a red Codling or two. Just follow the path along to Dunstanburgh castle and work your way back from there to the harbour trying any of the deep gullies that run along there. If it is wet though give it a miss as the rocks are absolutely lethal when wet.

A bit further south from Lesbury is Amble, you can nearly always catch a flatty or two from the small pier there. Not far past there is Druridge Bay a very long sandy beach that is also well known in the area for it's flatfish.

All of those marks will give you a chance of catching a fish but if you are wanting somewhere close and not wanting to travel far my choice would probably be Alnmouth.

Hope this helps a bit.

Jim.

Hello Robin

If you're around on the 18th, Amble SAC is starting its summer league on the Aln, fishing from 3.00pm to 7.00pm.
You're more than welcome to come along and fish as a guest. It's basically just a flatty bash, but the craic is always good !
Just park by the Duchess bridge (the one into Alnmouth), and head down the riverside path till you bump into some anglers...that'll be us.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies.

I was thinking I might try Alnmouth - I remember fishing there as a kid. I also remember catching flatties under my feet when wading around in the river at low tide!

Where's the best place to fish? What tide is best? (Not that I have much choice - I'll be fishing in the evening).

Tony - would love to come and join you but we're heading home on the 18th, and I don't fancy dragging 5 kids fishing with me

Is there any particular bait or tactic I should use? I was thinking I might just use one of my barbel rods and do a simple running ledger with ragworm on the hook.

Can you recommend a good tackle/bait shop?

Finally (phew), is there Hardy/Greys factory ship/discount outlet? Is it worth visiting?

Thanks all,

R.

Right....

1...just down the steps, opposite Church Hill, to the river, fishes best last 3 hours up to high water.

2...light rod, running ledger will be fine, but you may need up to 4 oz sinkers. The tide can be fierce there. Don't need to cast too far though. Ragworm tipped with a bit of mackerel is perfect.

3...Amble Angling Centre for bait and advice. Into Amble, follow the signs for the harbour. Just before the turn for the harbour the tackle shop is on your left. Check out Amble Sea Angling Club and follow the link for the shops opening times etc.

4...It's always worth a look in at the factory shop. They usually have a few things reduced.

Hope you enjoy your stay, and bag a few fish !

OK, so that's round about here ?

Got it, thanks.

Can you tell me where it is? Google didn't turn up anything.

Hope you enjoy your stay, and bag a few fish !

Me too!

Thanks,

For the factory shop...when you get to Alnwick from Lesbury, turn left at the first roundabout you come to (look for the Oak Inn on your left). Keep going straight down the road for about 600 yards, the factory is on your left.

Credit cards at the ready !

For the fishing, that's where you want to be, Riverside Rd.
