Which Headlamp ?

Hello Lads,

I\'m looking to get a more powerful headlamp for the new season - what do most of you use / recommend? Currently got a Petzl with the square battery at the back of the headband which is ok, but I\'d like a bit more power.

Can you pick up decent second hand models anywhere ? - budget is about £40 - £50.

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers,

Coops

I got me self the new Petzl Myo 5 for £55 and it\'s excellent. 10 hrs on main beam and when you run out it\'s doesn;\'t just shut off leaving you in the dark it goes into reserve mode with about 6 months on the LED\'s which are plenty bright for baiting up etc.(i\'m exaggerating about the 6 months a little).

I keep saying this everytime it comes up but I would (and have) gone for the Nightsearcher over the MFA. Only difference is the battery connecter.

:D

i bought meself one of them argos jobbies for a tenner lol 8 leds with 3 settings more than does the job for me £60 for a torch you lot must be mad lol ,my missus would kill me :o

Over the years, this question has come up on a regular basis.

When asked, I used to sing the praises of the MFA 2n1........however....... Mike\'s right about the battery connector. I\'ve had to replace the coiled cable TWICE in 3 years due to the cable connection failing, on both occassions.
We got Ian one of the newer (led) versions in February........it\'s gone EXACTLY the same way.

I thought that maybe I\'d just been \"unlucky\" with mine, originally.....but for the SAME fault to occur 3 times (twice on mine and now also on Ians\'), is a bit TOO much of a coincidence.

Can\'t fault the lamp, itself....it\'s excellent, in my opiniion........just a shame about the battery connection.

I\'m looking for a new headtorch this winter......the Petzl Nightsearcher looks to be a contender. Thanks for posting the link, Mike.....I\'ll certainly be having a look at them.

The MFA lamp is crap - the headpiece and connectors fall to bits.

Would buy a 12 led light of ebay for £10 from Hong Kong including p&p.

Oh yes, or a Speleo 14 LED light with fxion battery

Got to agree with red 5 - i have got the myo 3 it has got 3 leds (hence the myo3 bit) and a single main beam,- lasts 180hrs when using the leds and a mere 25hrs if you use the spot light. the ones that i used to really recommend from terry\"s at hebburn are still a very good light but when the bulb goes its a bit of a tw*t to find a replacement.

[TC while i was fishing the Pier Tonight (got nowt mind you) i could see my rod tip reflectors from about 50 ft glowing like a Beacon so the leds are as bright as you will need, your hardley trying to guide aircraft in are you.

I totally agree with red5 the petzl Myo5 is a good lamp have used mine for about 18 months with no problems allows me to walk across rocks to a mark with just using the led\'s gives about 15ft of light distance, bought mine through ebay for £38 + carriage from canada.
Cotswold camping are doing them for £50
Also have a Tiga SL which is a brilliant lamp but battery is very heavy.

the main beam on the petzl myo 5 isn\'t as bright as the MFA I used to have have but as has been mentioned b4...you don\'t need to be guiding an aircraft in to land or substituting the local lighthouse. It p***es me off when you turn to talk to someone with a tiga and then spend the next ten mins tripping over coz you can\'t see a thing.
The LEDs are cracking. The lads were calling me a mountain goat as I sped off across the rocks with just the LED\'s on.

Hi Coops.
I have a petzl typeish headlemp with the square battery on the back.BUT It wasnt really great. what I did...
Not sure where you live, but No Frills DIY on the old coast road at benton, sells a rechargeable 6v Searchlight, for about £6.99 maximum. Loads ofthese cheap shops sell them.
I simply stripped one, removed the battery and bought a 6v halogen bulb from a mountaineering shop in Newcastle. converted it with a simple jackplug and twin cable from any DIY shop.
It is really bright, and the battery lasts hours.
Recharge it by using the charger diode from the searchlight.
Its a doddle mate. absolute piece of P***.
As good as any lamp youd pay £60 for.
email me if you not sure Ill take a pic of it and send it you.

10 Quid for a 12 LED headlight, I bought mine for 30pence plus 5.99 postage :D
cracking good headlight too, if you look carefully on ebay you can pick these up for 1p!
