Just got back from a week at Whitby with the missus. Managed to fit in 4 short sessions in great weather:
Sunday 4th - jelly worming on west pier looking for Pollock, only got a couple of tiny ones but a few Dabs and the inevitable Whitby scorpion fish on the float with Rag made the day interesting. Dirty water coming out of the river meant no Mackerel showing.
Tuesday 6th - couple of hours either side of high tide on Upgang beach. Two rods, one short one long with 2 hook flappers. Frozen blacks and mackerel. Great fun fishing and double shots of Dabs and Flounders coming thick and fast. Lost count and had to switch to one rod in the end to spin bait out. Normally hope for a bass at this mark but flat calm sea and blazing sun meant no surf, and no chance. Great fun fishing 'though.
Wednesday 7th - couple of hours either side of high tide at Sandsend cliffs mark - "the top of the world". This mark was recommended by Dan from the tackle shop who said I had a chance there due to the tide run. Big Crab baits on heavy kelp rigs and a single 3/0 chucked right into the rough stuff. No fish to report but one missed bite was a real "butt lifter". I lifted up and felt a good fish in the kelp, tried to get it moving and then it was gone. There was still plenty of bait on the hook when I got it back so I think I should have waited a little longer before striking. It was a pleasure to be on the mark 'though in great weather although Crabs were a pain pulling at the baits all the time. One thing I found strange as a cliff mark first timer is how much casts seemed to be dropping short even when blasted into the sky. I guess it's just the perspective from being 30 yards up from water level.
Thursday 8th - LRF rod fun fishing on West pier and pretty much a fish a chuck. Coleys up to about a pound and a half, small Pollock, Dabs, a Weever and a couple of Scorpion fish. Drop shotting with slivers of Mackie on a size 6 hook. Nice bit of sport with the LRF rod bending to the butt on the bigger Coleys.
