Tried Roker pier tonight with some mackerel gear and a few rag worms
threw some bait out on the heavier rod and tried the feathers and spinners for the macky
A hour and a half later no fish, sore arm and loads of gear lost, decided to call it a day for the mackerel and concentrate on the bait fishing
Opened the tackle box and spotted a float set up so decided to chuck this on the spinning rod with a juicy rag hooked through the head about 2 metres out and less than a metre deep (could still see the rag worm wriggling away)
Brought the bait rod in and was baiting back up and watching the float only to see a flash and the float dive at speed, turned in what seamed like slow motion to watch the rod flip over the railings and disappear to the bottom of the sea rather quickly!
Did the only thing you can do in these circumstances and laughed a bit before i clicked on i had just lost my rod and reel that cost just shy of a oner less than a month ago:eek:
tried in vain for half hour to retrieve it with some feathers and a spinner (probably at shields pier by now)
So going to try tomorrow at low tide to see if its still there with some sort of home made grappling device
Think there might be lesson somewhere in here about not leaving light gear unattended,
wonder what the fish was???

Most likely a pollock

Did you have your drag loose enough?
Unfortunately not, it was very weedy where we where spinning so had the drag set pretty heavy just to drag through the snags, didnt even cross my mind to adjust it when i chucked the float out, didnt think there would be anything big lying in wait so close in and near the surface (silly boy)
Just trying to think of some sort of contraption i can build to lift it up incase i can see it at low water today

Unlucky that mate, I wouldn't hold my breath of it lying around the low tide mark sadly, could be a big bonus for someone who catches a big fish with a float, rod and reel setup lol.

In seriousness though its lesson learned, never leave a light rod with tackle in the water as sea fishing, you never know whats next never mind the size. Always slacken the drag if you are going to leave your stuff, I do hope you find it at low water though mate.

Cheers mate and its def a lesson learnt
Its worth a try at low water, the tides are large at the min and the stretch i was fishing shows a very large section of rocks at low water, no way of getting down to them though, wouldnt mind just seeing if its there to see if anythings still on the end lol
Probably aint a hope in hell of getting it back but you have to try
I think i might be a tad cursed in this department as a about ten years ago i was fishing the roundhead at roker pier casting towards the mouth of the two piers with a cono-flex rod and a slosh 30 when a large ship went out of the harbour that looked a million miles away from my tackle! well you can guess the next bit
it obviously became detached from whatever dragged it in and i could see it floating about 40 yards out
I borrowed my mates rod with a set of feathers on and dragged it back in second cast, much to the disbelief and amusement of those fishing around me and myself
Always checked my drag after that, until yesterday lol

I thought I was having a bad night with the little tiddlers nicking my ragworm!but you and your mate had an epic session mate!, I was the one float fishing to the right of you.

My night was saved by a decent sized pollock and a nice coley, both just after the sun went down. I reckon it was probably a pollock took your rod over. I would have stayed but had to get back to the car park before 10. Did you end up catching anything?

When I was packing up I realised i've split the end on my lrf rod, so expense for me too.

Nightmare mate sorry yo hear you lost ya rod. Better luck next time eh

Cheers mate
trying to look on the brightside
the spinning has been pretty disappointing for the mackerel this year so i am hopefully not going to miss out on to much
Might get it back come 3 o clock anyway:D

Alright mate

Yep that session has to go down as the worst in living memory for me, still you have got to have a laugh about it

I moved right to the top for a couple of hours after you went and you couldnt bait up fast enough, the rod was going mad before the bait hit the bottom

All small whiting and loads of undersize flattys but it was a bit of sport to end the night with and the ground was much easier going, didnt lose a thing (not that i had much gear left by then)

Tempted to try the float again tonight, see what else i can lose

I dont get on the piers in summer I fish for carp during the summer months. Then get the winter gear out in aspertation of a fat winter cod. I wouldnt have said the fishing been poor this year infact I thought its been a decent year for the spinng lads with a wide range of fish being caught. Tight line be safe ..... fisherman

I think what i meant was poor for me:rolleyes:
I havnt been trying particularly hard, but the times i have been down the mackerel have been nowhere near as prevalent and abundant as they used to be.
When i started fishing years ago you where virtually guaranteed a big bag of
makky for the freezer if the conditions where right
This year i have seen them caught but not in the numbers they used to.
Last night should of been perfect, calm seas, warmish, top of the tide coinciding with dusk but i saw less than 5 caught and there where plenty rods trying

aye, its either laugh or cry!

at least you ended up getting some fish. they definatley all came out in the dark, wish I could of stayed longer but didnt want to get locked in the car park.

hope you get the rod back mate, take some polarised glasses if youve got them, might help you spot it. you could have a look along the beach as well, might of got washed up.
