Windows 10?

Being prompted by my laptop to upgrade to 10 from 7

Should I??

:)

Yes do it.
I upgraded to 10 last week for free at first you need to explore the new function on hand and you have a helper to take you through and explain the new section's but i find it much better and i also think my computer is running much quicker.

I upgraded from 8.1 a couple of weeks ago. Definitely prefer it to 8.1, it is free for the first 12 months (so until July 2016) after which you will have to pay. IIRC they will continue to support Windows 7 for another couple of years but after that you won't get any more security patches.

The only downside is the amount of data it collects and sends back to the mothership. Of course Google and your smartphone do exactly the same but if that sort of thing bothers you (it does me a bit) then this is worth a read about how to set it up...

What Windows 10's "Privacy Nightmare" Settings Actually Do

You can try it and if not to your liking you can revert back to 7 without losing anything. I did this after finding there is no media centre on 10 which I use for tv and like.

no movie maker neither, loads of apps but not many that interest me, probs great for the younguns though.

I had problems getting Adobe Lightroom to work and had to revert back to 8.
It did my head in to the point I wanted to smash everything in the world to bits.

Cheers Lads...at the end of the day XP lasted years on a lot of machines and 7 is used by a lot of businesses so it'll be good for a few years yet I think

And if it ain't broke... :)

i was on 8-1, how did you revert back to 8 ?
I bought my laptop from Pc world on the team valley. I had heard about problems with Windows 10 on some of the photography websites so I asked them not to install it.....it was a free upgrade. I asked them to install Office and my photo editing software.
I picked up my laptop and it had Windows 10 installed and from day one it was a nightmare. I tried to contact Adobe but the password they gave me for the programs was written down wrong too.
In the end I took it back and they set it back to Windows 8 or 8.1, I don't know if I'm honest. And fingers crossed it's been ok.
I was disappointed with PCI world if I'm honest. One of the guys on the knowhow desk tried to speak to me like ****e but I stopped that straight away.
I won't go back.

Regards Ian.

I bought a new laptop back in April with Windows 8.1 installed. Running perfect. I was offered a free upgrade to Windows 10 in July so went ahead and installed it. Within a couple of days the laptop started freezing; it didn't matter what I was using, creating a document with Word, reading existing documents in my files or browsing the internet, it would just stop doing anything. It wouldn't respond to anything, mouse, keyboard keys, nothing. Control Alt Delete didn't even work. The only way to get it back was to force it to close down by pressing and holding the power key and restarting it.
I thought it must have been a problem with the machine so I took it back to PC World who ran a diagnostics check on it and it came out perfect. They suggested that it must have been an iffy upgrade to Windows 10 so they restored it back to factory settings and re-installed Windows 10 at the shop. I took it home and it immediately began doing the same.
I restored it back to Windows 8.1 myself and it's been great ever since.
I've read on the internet that there are loads and loads of problems with 10; Microsoft haven't spent enough time proving it before rushing it out onto the market.
Something I noticed while it was running on W10 was that the screen brightness control was operating backwards; brighter was going darker and visa versa. Lots of people mentioned this on the net also.

It just has way too many problems at the minute for me. I'm sticking with 8.1 which I didn't like at first but I'm used to it now and quite like it.
Maybe in a couple of years Microsoft will have all the problems ironed out of 10 and then I might think about upgrading again.

Some people don't seem to have any problems after upgrading so it's really down to personal choice if you want to gamble on upgrading.
I would suggest though that it you decide to go for it; make sure that you have everything like documents, photos etc backed up onto an external hardrive just in case you lose it if you have problems.

well done for putting the jumped up upstart ahole in his place Ian, after reading this thread think i'll give W10 a miss like

I'm running 2 laptops with windows 10 , only probs I have found is int explorer can at times be very slow and unresponsive and this stupid Cortana box popping up and at times the screen minimises when using the touchpad . think ive sorted these 2 issues now , with a lot of searching for what to disable within windows .

windows 7 was the best system imho .

.been temped myself, dont think its for free, may be wrong.there always asking me to upgrade.from what ive read,DONT think its any better than the 7.so im happy with my 7.might be wrong,ps,im no wizz kid mind you.:)

yeah it is a free upgrade until it has been out a year then if you want it you will have to buy it, one of the problems i had was no movie maker, microsoft were stopped from putting it on, any way i downloaded the free version from windows and it works fine, still hav'nt solved the photo editing yet though, from what i gather there will not be any more releases of windows as windows 10 will be constantly upgraded as it goes a long.
