Winter Boat Fishing

Chaps can you help?

Having just completed my first summer season on the boat I‘m wondering about the winter…The boat’s in the Royal Quays so sea access isn’t a problem but I’m wondering about the practicalities of fishing over some of the close in marks as the fish move in - is it worth it or is it time to pack up for the year?

Any advice much appreciated

1st thing i would say is dont go out on a cold day with risk of ice, 2 reasons, one with the mariner is fresh water fed from many drain pipes it freezes quick and also and this cost me last year, because my boat is salt water cooled i sucked in ice that had formed under the boat and it distroyed my rubber impela costing me alot to fix.

I have tried close in before with not much luck over the winter but to be honest i am rubbish at fishing rough ground, jfk has had some cracking trips in past years close in during winter months.

All the normal spots would produce i am sure, Souter, St Marrys etc.

Sure others with alot more experiance will be able to help you out more, i for one will only be out if i am bored out my mind and its a sunny day with a smooth sea..not my cup of tea.

Mick winter fishing at times can be far better than summer fishing there is times through winter you often catch a hell of a lot more cod then you actually catch in summer especially if the water is clear enough for wrecking we had our biggist catches of cod through april this year some of the better days we actually had was in the april festival there is one thing for sure dureing winter you arent plagued with bloomes of algie which can often knock the fishing off in summer we had our first uptiding trip yesterday conditions were far from ideal with a stiff westerly and i usually start a little late on october but we still manged to take some nice codling a good sigh of things to come.

Mick this was the winning cod taken on my boat in april it weighs 16lb.and paul barret from ripon won £1000 with his fish.
