  • big cod still?

Catching big fish has been a problem in the North Sea for quite some time.
I work on the chieftain out of Whitby. I have worked for john and Michele
now for four years. Before working for john and Michele I spent 12 years on
the rigs and prior to that I spent 14 years in the fishing industry.
The thing that surprised me so much when I started working on the chieftain
was that catching cod was know problem, but catching big fish of say 30lbs
    was much harder to achieve.
We travel all over the North Sea, from as far north as the firth of forth to
as far south as the Norfolk coast. The scarcity of big fish is very
worrying. We had a resent 94 hour trip where we where fishing for part of
that trip in the Danish sector of the North Sea, I went in the wheelhouse
when we where moving from one wreck to another, and noticed that we where
178 miles away from the Whitby bell boy.

What a distance you have to go to try and catch big fish realistically now
    days?
As it turned out we had two outstanding fish that trip, one was 30lb cod and
one was a 33lb cod. We had plenty of smaller fish, in to teens of pounds etc
and a few in the twenty’s, all cod and fish in good condition, but it seamed
an extremely long way to go to get what the anglers wanted?
Still we had a great time and everybody enjoyed the trip and I suppose
    that’s what counts?
I was just wondering what angler’s thoughts on this forum would be to how
far they would be prepared to go to catch big fish like that on a regular
    basis.
    Regards John the crewman.

              Charlton.
What sort of information do you want?
Do you want a catch report? Some inside information on to where we have been fishing?
I can give you a trip to trip account if you want? Or you could just go to our web page http://www.chieftaincharters.com/PHOTOS%2006.htm where Michele keeps an excellent account of our trips.
              Regards John.

would like a report of what is being caught at Whitby, names of captors of big fish. Rioch Ward sends me some info but more the merrier. Will also keep looking in at your web site and the Associations.
