  • Howick 18/9

Had a ride up north yesterday afternoon to fish one of my fave marks just south of Howick. Got there and sea wasn't really big enough for the mark but after mooching around and wasting time eventually settled on a shot.

The place was crawling with small codling just under and just over size. Must have had 10 or 11 in total before running out of frozen crab. They were coughing up hardback crabs (see pic) and obviously feeding hard. Once the crab ran out bites just dried up.

Disappointed not to get a better fish but did hook one which felt (much) better, dragged it through the kelp only for it to hook up on a rock shelf maybe 30 yards out (small tides - can't get to the edge). Waited ages for it to swim out but to no avail and eventually had to pull for a break.

All returned except for 2 terminal deep hooked fish which were size of course.

An enjoyable few hours out, although the usual scenery was spoilt a bit by the fog !

Canny little trip mate. Didn't get a touch on frozen crab last night off the pier. Few fish on blacks though. Enjoy your fish supper!

Had reccy down that way and looks rocky ground but good for Codlings.

I find it a bit hitty/missy mate but when you get on the fish bites come thick and fast. For sure you need plenty of leads with you.
