Roker pier

According to the council its closed until november for repairs.knowing the council it will probably be sometime next year:mad::mad:

Thanks lads, that's my Wednesday night plan out the window then lol I might try the rathouse as I've heard that canny produce canny fish too but I also hear it's quite chocker lately

i was on ratty laST NIGHT IT WAS PACKED THOUGHT THE FISH WAS JUMPING ONTO THE END LOL;)

Someone mentioned to me a £25 charge a year to fish the pier when it reopens anyone else heard of this or is it a load a BULL ?

lots of rumours flying about, but as it is open to the general public to stroll along and a listed tourist attraction (god knows why) best they could do is close of the end section and charge for that .....

shud do that with the south pier anarl id defo pay for that :)
worst thing they ever did stop the passes £6 a year to fish the pier and north eastern,a poor excuse when it got stopped for security issues, someone pinched a 5 ton demolition ball, anglers got the blame as usual, the bloke that can move a 5 ton ball would be a decent caster thats a certainty :)

Back in the Dark Ages I used to be secretary for A.W.A.C (Association of Wearside Angling Clubs) - Chairman of Sunderland Sea Anglers and secretary for Southwick Sea Angling Club - Clubs used to submit their competition dates and I would allocate dates for Roker Pier (At the time, the general public could still access) however after discussing with the council they allowed AWAC members to use the Roker Pier for competions as long as we could prove we would control access and obviously safety regards sea conditions. The clubs allocated the dates had to supply a gateman (a car normally parked on the pier, behind the gates and provided somewhere for the gateman to control access - The keys for the gates used to be picked up from the pilot house (They had a copy of the AWAC clubs rota and therefore knew who was on the pier and who to chase up if there was any problems).Normally the clubs woud drop a couple of quid for the gateman. Worked a treat and never had any complaints or issues raised by the council. Only the odd complaint from Joe public wanting to stroll along with the pushchair, dogs, kids etc when there was probably 50 / 60 anglers chucking lead and hooks about.

Remember that well - They wanted (Willy Lake - then at the time, chairman of the port authority ) to charge £15 - Bill Samuelson, Jack Melton, Frank Peacock and myself argued and wouldn't give in till they finally accepted that £5 was more than enough for a working man to pay and would well cover the cost of any additional security (He claimed) would be required to prevent us from pinching any more 5 ton demolition balls.

Dont give them ideas chris cos thats what they will do plus you would still get them going on, seaham pier has a lock on it and ya need a key they still get on there.

I also heard this when i was on the rathouse the other night that so and so were thinking of charging £25 a year to fish the south pier where the docks are and put railings etc up

im old enough to remember the pier being closed when fishing was taking place, like you say long time ago now,in our modern health and safety culture, equal rights etc, roker being council owned will never see it closed to a handful of people,if the port authority had there way i believe they would ban fishing altogether .....

Never been on it but just looking at the map the south pier looks a canny shot like. Heard from a previous post that it's all fenced off but I just wonder if anyone sneaks on for a chuck.
