Thoughts on Crab Traps

What's anyones thoughts on crab traps - tyres etc? I used to have a few down a while back. I see that there are literally hundreds down on the fish quay beach but that a select few people seem to have monopolised them - even though they have probably only gathered and dug in a few of those tyres themselves. My own thoughts are that tyres belong to no-one, and that once a sea has ripepd them out its up to whoever gets to them first to dig them back in - and in doing so - 'stake' ownership. I mean, just because someone has started 'doing' some traps which appear to have been abandoned does not in any way make those traps - much less the crab - his to own by right. My thoughts? Basically, I'll always do the traps down on thw quay for these reasons - irrespective of who claims ownership for him and his favourite friends. Those tyres only prevent crab reaching the sanctuary of the rocks and weed anyway. So for that reason, we all need to accept reality - traps should be universal unless you can prove you've maintained them year after year - and even then, the argument still remains that you're blocking 'free crab' meeting the rocks anyway - so do em' anyway!

Great time to start a thread like this

Peace and Goodwill to all men :):)

as long as the feckas stay out of the traps that dont belong them ha ha

i get mine from the west ,so always have a laugh when i hear about people robbing out the tyres :D:D:D

Been said many times the traps have been dumped by Anglers or Professional bait collectors they dont actually belong to anyone,if you are there first you can take the crabs, personally speaking i just collect what i need without the need to look in tyres/traps,I've been accused before of looking through tyres and they got the same reply as anyone gets if they appear aggressive "What you going to do about it" with a little extra added to that sentence........basically they did nothing lol.......BTW i never touched those traps i was digging for worms
I seen one of them in the local tackle shop a few days later and he looked very sheepish :D
Common sense prevails, plenty of bait for everyone,I've actually dug worms with a complete stranger and we shared out what we had, which worked out in my favour as i did'nt fair as well as him,I think thats what fishing is about..........Unless you are collecting bait for a living :D

All you need to do is have a search, it takes about 30 seconds and you will see that Micky, or have you had a little look already.

I will leave it for now but if it does kick off it will go, possibly along with the person that ends up kicking it off  :D :D :D

Jim.

It's all fine and well throwing a link at me Greg and saying "it's all been debated before" - when a cursorary glance at your link shows nothing specific on the talking point I raised. And may I ask, where did you learn your moderation skills from? This has been a perfectly nornmally put issue in the hope of provoking sensible debate - and already you're threatening to take it down?
Where do you do your fishing Greg: the Peoples Republic of China?

this topic has been discussed to the n'th degree and invariably gets people hot under the collars...I would wager Jim is only "threatening" to pull the rug on this thread should it turn into a war of words and goes beyond that of an objective debate

A Cursory glance eh, I suggest you go back and have a proper look at some of the threads on that link Micky, if you had done that (which is the reason I put the link there in the first place) it would have answered a lot of your questions.

Every time this this subject comes up there are loads of arguements and PMs going back and forth and we have to sort the problems out not you.

I don't know how long you have been using forums but they do get heated, anyone that has used this forum for a while knows, that there have been problems every time this subject has been brought up in the past. It is not long since the last time and it won't be happening this time either.

Thanks for keeping me right by the way, I assume by your answer that you do know all about forums and there workings??

I have never been to China yet no, maybe you could enlighten me on the fishing over there just in case I do go one day.

If you take a look at the rest of the answers on this thread both before and after I posted, then again it will tell you about how the subject has gone down in the past.

I certainly don't apologise for my post and it still stands, if it does kick off it will be gone, whether you or anyone else likes it or not.

Jim.

Jim.

I had never used forums before now so I didn't know where to begin really. I just wanted to bring this up as a friend of mine, over a pint last night, told me he used to have loads of tyres as a kid. Apparently the people who do them now on the quay are a bit of a nasty crowd really (2 of them stole a line of his).
Anyway. I can see it's a heated topic and many here may have vested interest.

.... at dawn anyone??

So your total knowledge of forums and my moderating skills come from your four full days on NESA, you must pick things up very quickly to be able to put me right on my mistakes already Micky.

My comments on possibly removing the thread were not for your benefit but the benefit of NESA as people getting at each others throats does nothing at all for anyone.

Jim.

Micky: fact of the matter is its a very contentious issue.

have been know to climb upon my soap box myself on the subject.

the point is, some people have very strong feelings about, and its all too easy to write something on here from the safety of your armchair. People react, and on subjects they feel passionate about react strongly

Now, there are some that might disagree with what people say but are sensible enough to see that they have a right to say it. there are others that are unable to agree to disagree and the whole thing descends into farce, PM war, threats of violence etc

So every now and then these things need to be nipped in the bud before they get to that point.

admin/moderation is a thankless task, but without it, the place would self destruct. Nobody pays Jim to be here many hours a day making sure everyone behaves. But he does, for everyones benefit

If people come in here and can't accept the rules they don't last long, and generally speaking everyone that contributes - admin, mods, and members alike understand that, and are fairly united in what the place is about

not many get a second chance
