Crab traps.

I have seen a lot of traps that seem to be abandoned. How do you know if they belong to anyone, apart from them being full of mud?
Not sure of the protocol!
Do you have to put your own in and how do others know that you have?
This has always confused me!

They all look abandoned... That's the idea. I wouldn't touch ANY traps you see otherwise it wouldn't suprise me if the bloke who put them there had a few strong 'words' with someone going through the traps they had placed. Easiest way is to set your own mate as people are very protective over the traps they look after. I think they fill with mud very quickly aswell even after only one or two tides aswell so you can't really use that as a guide to which traps are still in use.

The mud is in the tyre because the crab prefer it, a bare tyre only seems to attract the odd hen with eggs and big dog crabs that are carrying most bare tyres never seem to get any crab at all

Never understood how anyone can through old tyres into a river, and still claim they are theirs

They are not "Thrown"into the river. They are dug in so they are not washed away, and its very hard work. Some have to be carried hundreds of yards.
Thats why lads who put them in class them as there own and don,t like other people doing them......
