now the mackerel season is fast approaching with the boats reporting big shoals offshore, i,d like to ask a few questions if any body can help.
1. what is the tops mackerel spinner.
2.what is the best feathers to use.
3. is squid a good alternative bait to macky belly when float fishing, and what is the best depth to fish at. cheers

the eternal optamist:red:

just my opinion too lol

1. use anytthing you want mate there the daftest fish in the sea and very gready so they will take anything your throw at them

I agree, they will take anything when they are feeding.

Its not going to be as soon as last years May mackerel from the shore unless we get a long spell of west winds and warmer weather.

Still no eel showing yet and they always show about 3-4 weeks before the mackerel do.

Theres another species that arrives the same time as the mackeral. Charvus Scumus. Can be found on most piers filling carrier bags full of fish, and leaving crap all over the place.

too early in the year to get riled....maybe in a few months ;):D

Hopefully I'll avoid them this year...

always chav's on blyth pier in the summer, playing music off their phone and climbing down the ladders to get close to the water

If you want Mackeral you cannot go wrong with small spinners i.e toby spinners/lures etc any spinner thats got a shine to it mackeral will grab, also use daylites(basically a multi hook rig which attracts mackeral and other species) to catch them in numbers i like to either just use a spinner or float the latter for me is my favourite way of catching them.
I have used Daylites etc before but i like the float fishing much more entertaining,I use a light rod, light line and a small reel. I have found in general off the piers the float fishing can be amazing in August with Coalies,Mackeral the main species along with the odd garfish, pollack etc. Last year i even had a Ling on the float. For bait i use small strips of mackeral belly but i also use sandeel, ragworm when i want to target something else( i couldn't say whether squids a good alternative to mackeral belly for float fishing bait i am yet to try it going to try squid this year, i would imagine mackeral will take squid though). I think around June the first shoals will arrive although if the weather stays settled and sea stays flat they could arrive earlier.:)

Hope the above information is some use to you.:)

mackerel do take small slivers of squid as its white and it moves in the water if just slightly hooked
if your ever stuck for lures ect for macky a bit of foil traped onto a hook with some line will catch them too

I've getting mackeral on baits intended for other species on occassions, but i am definitly gonna try some squid this year for them:).
I think i'll also have a go using the tin foil trapped hook method as well.:)
