I don,t know about anyone else but i thought this years cod fishing was total crap.what happened to the spring run, what happened to the winter run for that matter. I fished every week from back end of september till now and managed to get a grand total of three, with one just over five pounds. just a few years ago i saw more fish landed in one night than i,ve sees all seoson this year . Doe,s anyone agree with me .

the eternal optamist:red:

Aye the winter just gone wasn't great by any means. I was happy though scoring 2 big cod (10lb 2ounces and 9lbs)in January of Roker pier.

Theres always next winter who nows we all might have a great season:).

well lads i'm not going to complain,i've had more than my fair share this season.one night i had 16 fish ranging from 2lb to 8lb,all on shields pier so the fish are there it's just the case of being in right place at right time.

had plenty of codling but not the monsters i wanted .all averaged from 1.5lb and over biggest at 8lb, lets hope the next is better

i have noticed some years are better than others, and i think the cod stocks are slowly healing.
its the same here! i keep catching baby codling all the time. this tells me that there is plenty cod, they just need to grow. sometimes its a few years inbetween.(check the catch reports for the last 5 years or so) hopefully the coming winter will bring some big cod runs in :) or it could be the year after.:(
fingers x. :)

have to agree was totally sheehite was out maybee 30-40 times and caught two biggest just under 3lb, plenty of whiting mind, this has been the worst year for me, i have fished sunderland pier shields pier blyth pier, cambois, the groyne, whitburn, seaburn, rat house seaham spiles, seaham beach, hawthorn, the blast beach, shields beach, the target, frenchmans, and for two cod, one caught at seaham and one at the rat house.

I have to say that I had a very good year with regards to numbers and the size of cod caught. My brother just started back fishing last season and had a fish of 12Lb. We found it wasn't so much the sea conditions as the tides that were the best times to fish and had more cod in flat calm seas than we did when the sea was running, even if that meant getting out of bed at 2 in the morning! We mainly fish around amble and to be honest I can only remember two blanks from the whole season. Lugworm and crab were the preffered baits and anything else just didn't cut it.
Graham.

I think some of it boils down to luck. I've had quite a good season, with one night alone I took over 30lb of fish, and could have had more if I had more bait. I've also had a double and 4 others over 5lb. We haven't had a lot of luck with conditions either, I think I can only remember a handful of decent blows this winter.

The South had a great season, maybe this year it will be ours.

four years ago i had 58 cod from the steetley pier up to nine and a half pounds, most over four pounds, good fish and loads of whitting ,this yesr almost nothing and i tried various marks all over our coast still bog all , maybe i was just unlucky.

well for me 07/08 ive had my most consistent season ever, nowt big but plenty to the 3lb mark.Biggest was 7lb from the warriors and most consistent has been the Tyne.Had a few good bags me and the bairn.

The codling (note I don't say cod!) fishing on the south East coast has been the best since I've been down here (20 years). Lots and lots of fish between 2 and 3lb with the very odd bigger one. Even so, it's all about bait, tide and sea state.
Right place+ wrong time= no fish.
right place+ Wrong bait= no fish etc etc.
I'm also a jucky git!

FLIPPIN HECK the only reason i took up fishing again was after buying a copy of sea angler and seeing all the double figure cod in there :o thought i would be pulling then in one after another :red: looks like ill have to take up carp fishing now for owt owa 10 poond ,anyone know anyone after an entry level beach caster n fixed spool reel :D

well the offer is there mate, time to catch big fish mate.lol only kidding mate, like i've said right place right time all down to luck mate.and i think next season will be your season.

Being at the right place at the right time with good conditions and tides has been the key during most seasons, just down to lady luck I gues. Mate of mine travels to Arbroath from the N.E on a very regular basis during the Winter, he had more poor sessions than good but still kept on persevereing for the right trip. It paid off in Janruary this year when he had a cracking session with his biggest cod tipping the scales at 12lb. Fishing in his local area was poor but double figure fish where still caught.
