42lb 7oz cod

Ive been drawn in to replying to this and have to agree that it looks doubtful that its the size stated but hey who knows, anythings possible. Historically most monster cod are wreck caught or certainly caught from deep water. A 42lb cod big in the middle of summer with no roe?? If that had been a spawning fish then your looking at a potential 50lb winter fish.

Ive seen countless 20-30lb fish from the good old days, whitby, balcary etc and struggle to see how it would make 42lb, the hand next to the mouth is the give away together with the foot next to the body of the fish. And the post of the Norwegian fish doesnt help!

I have to agree with some of the posts and say it should have been officially weighed. I would have had a press release, claim in to Sea Angler for fish of the month etc etc

It seems there are a number fishermans tales, some are true some are beyond belief and some just have to be taken with a pinch of salt. What this is I can only guess.

And yes this is a forum - definition to openly express ones opinion!!

Anyway whatever size it is one hell of a local fish! Hopefully a sign of good things to come for the winter!

Well said mate:)

If you want another picture for comparison, look for (google) Ken Robinson's 40lb cod caught from balcary back in the 80s.
Imagine how many massive fish like this and bigger are taken by trawlers daily!
It's his call if he wanted to keep it.
I don't think many anglers would have put it back tbh.

Well said mate...the doubters and green eyed monsters are seriously p*****g me off on this site, that's why I don't put catch reports on anymore, all they have to say is well done to the bloke,If yous are so petty about fish sizes then when you post a pic of a big fish make sure it's on the scales in the pic with the weight visible.i know it's a forum of chat and opinions but some people need to grow up.

christ...it took me 20 minutes to read thru this thread,
it a nice fish,of this,theres no doubt,
however,i cant help but feel, that the pics and video dont do it justice, leading to some of the above replies..........
but, everyone is entitled to an opinion, and i cant see for the life of me,why anyone questioning its weight, should be labelled as "a green eyed monster"jealous tw"t"etc etc.when it clearly looks a lot lighter than its stated weight.
I commend some of the comments that have been posted, for simply stating, what a hell of a lot of peeps thought when they first set eyes on the vid.
Im in no way calling the lad that caught the fish a liar(as has been mentioned by other members)just the fact that the pics and vid only leave room for doubt.

cracking fish! i was off with my dad in his boat that day we were near yous when you landed it, we seen the rod getting snapped and someone getting hooked.
