Ive just bought a Penn 535 gs and have read a few things about them on here. Apparently they can be a bit of a handfull, nesting and what not. Im just wondering if anyone has any info about tuning this real?

Pete I have been using the 535 for a few years now and have never found any need to tune it. The only problem I have had with it was when I overfilled it, recipe for disaster lol. It is not a reel for long distance work more for rough ground and as it holds plenty of 30lb you should have no probs. Just take it easy and don\'t try to cast too far till you get the hang of it.

Cheers Jim, Ive just been reading that it has 2 brake block inside the spool that are off when the reel comes from the factory, and its best to switch them on for easier casting. Do you know out about this? Seems a bit stange.

Aye Pete that is the same as the 525 also. It will make a bit of difference with the blocks in. You can pick them up for a few bob and they are dead easy to fit mate.

When i got my 525 it seemed as bit fast and i was advised to use Yellow Rocket Fuel ( Reel Lubricant ) untill i got used to the reel., and when I felt comfortable with it, clean it and use Red Rocket Fuel. It may help you with your 535.

I had doubts about it when i got Mine, (535GS) but they said persvere.. and I did, and happy i did, youre never gonna break casting records with it, but it will handle the heaviest ground around. stick with it, its worth it mate.

If i had to pick a fault, it would be the tensioning nub, is under the handle.

Cheers for the advice chaps. Im not fussed about what distances Im gonna get with it. I just needed something a bit heavier than my 6500. I know the penns a very popular reel but Ive never used one. Just hope I get on with it.

Had my 535 for years now, Pete.......can\'t fault it.

As for getting used to it - I took to mine right from the off and never had a problem with it.

Best used with 30lb (or greater) line, as because the spool holds so much line, there\'s always the tempation to over-fill it when using lighter line. You really don\'t want to use line lighter than 30lb on the 535, as it\'s really meant for use as a rough ground reel (and it can\'t be beaten in that regard, imo).

As for the brake blocks - open the side plate to expose the brakes - they\'re probably already fitted - just need sliding into the \"on\" position.
 
I read somewhere to fill it no more than a quater of an inch from the top. Sounds a bit too much to me though, what do u chaps think?

Got a realy good bargain with it though, £43 brand new on ebay :D
 
Trial and error mate. A lot will depend on your casting style. You could try filling it up just below the shoulders of the spool and if you find it nests strip a bit more line off. Remember to ensure that there is only the tiniest amount of side to side movement on the spool first though. If there is any more than this tighten the knob near the handle. With the spool running as free as it can you\'ll deffinately have problems!
 
Like the 525\'s theres a set of anti-reverse bearings in the handle assembly where the handle spindle enters the reel casing. Ensure you oil/lubricate this monthly as these bearings don\'t seem to be as stainless as they should be!

I would say that a quarter of an inch would be about right Pete possibly a wee bit more. Try it and see mate that is the best way. As long as you do not fill it.
I once overfilled mine and did not realise untill half way through my session, what a nightmare lol. I thought it was just me having a bad night.

A bit of an update on this one.. Ive been using the reel and getting on with it quite well, the only thing is it makes a horrible noise when casting. It sounds like the ratchet is haf on or something. Ive only ever used Abu\'s and never heard anything like this, should this reel usualy sound like this? Bearing in mind its brand new, Ive had the thing to bits re grased the bearings etc.

Cheers Alan, Ive had it to bits tonight regreased the bearings etc, if its still the same Im gona have to take it to the shop and get them to look at it.

Mine is a few years old now and makes a wee bit of noise but not as bad as your\'s by the sounds of your post Pete. Keep an eye or an ear on it mate.

ive been using this reel for ten years on the rocks with 40lb main line and its still going theres nowt fancy about it and it does the job
