Does anyone know where the cheapest place to buy one of these new is. Found one at £85 so far.

Also heard mentioned cheap Abu\'s with some plastic parts. What are these and how do I avoid one?

Mike if that price includes the vat i would consider buying it,you still pay about £83.00 for the
ABU 6500 CT Blue Elite.

Ive got 2 of these and find them great,keep clear of the new sports model they do have problems.Try Gerrys at Morcambe Think he sells them for 77 plus vat sorry no pound sign on these foriegn keyboards or Veals the same prices.

Mike, I believe the sports mag had problems with the mag adjuster which has been changed to stop sand getting underneath and affecting it. I\'ve got one and find it great but it only gets used occassionally when I know I\'m fishing light on clean beaches otherwise my SL20 gets used.

Thanks everybody. Just ordered the Mag Elite 6500CT from Devon Sea Angling for £88.50 including postage and VAT. Just need a new rod now!

What sort of rod are you thinking of teaming it up with Mike? Got mine to go with a Conoflex Source Estuary Match. Brilliant rod for light beach/estuary work. It will handle 5oz leads and is a pleasure to use, one of my favourites now. Have had codling to 3lb off Blyth Pier on it although too tippy for hauling it up and had treble shots of decent whiting on the beach and feels like it\'s got the guts to handle decent fish if needed. First time out it registered bites from whiting not the size of my hand at around 80-100 yards.

Anybody thinking of a rod for this type of work should consider it. Read the tests in Sea Angler and TSF and they both rated it.

Peter, I tried a Penn PPT Viper last Sunday, off Saltburn pier, coupled up with the 6500. The vipers tip was nice and springy but it had plenty of backbone and it was feather light compare to my PPT Groundcast. Thing is though that both my current rods are Penn and I fancy something different (not a poker) purely for sand/shingle beaches).

I am tempted by a century rod but not sure. It also must be able to handle 6oz of lead (just in case).

have a look at the tip tornado sports mate
bit of rough and all clean beach work too.

i used to have a pair of vipers, good rods but they go very soft very quickly
