A certain top South coast Match angler

Mark thats nowt compared to being CORGI registered, as from the 1st april this year we have to report every gas job we do to the local authority, also any wiring we do ie wiring up boilers or their controls.............from next year you wont be able to sell your house with out a home owner pack, this MUST include full details of ALL gas and electricity work, servicing and inspections of any work in those catorgorys...also from april this year we can only install condensing boilers ( without very very good reason not to ).
It may sound like i do not agree with the changes but that could not be further from the truth, it will mean more work ( and money ) for those qualified trades persons and more important a better standard of workmanship for the customer........................AND DRIVE THE COWBOYS OUT OF TOWN, the plumbing, heating and electrical trades have , for to long now had a bad reputation as allways down to a minority of cowboys, with legislation changes lets hope this changes.
I attend many properties both domestic and commercial as see the shite that is produced by both cowboys and property owners.............. THESE CHANGES COULD NOT HAVE COME SOON
ENOUGH..........sorry to rant on about this in this thread but you may have guessed it is something i feel strongly about

Fully understand where you are coming from bob, there\'s nothing worse than having a bodge job to recover.

certainly anyone who earns a crust as a sparky or a plumber fair enough, they ought to have \'official\' registration and some sort of indmnity. but surely we have the right as free individuals to do what we like in our own homes. what next?? Certificate of digging?? Can\'t dig your own garden unless you\'re trained in digging cos you might injure yourself and need medical attention,

or \"I\'m arresting you for crossing the road without a valid certifacte of \'road crossing capability\"

I\'ve got an honours degree in elctronic and electrical engineering, yet I\'m not allowed to go near a plug socket in me kitchen.

FWIW on the plumbing front, we got an open range in the kitchen circa 1930, big open fire, surrounded by ovens with a backboiler. several plumbers came and looked at it and said, nope can\'t run central heating from that.

did it myself and it has kept 6 radiators toasty for 5 years now.

In that case, does anyone know of a good sparky who\'ll take a live feed into my shed? Was going to do it myself, but....

Just thought, Would B+Q stop selling electrical/gas/water DIY products to the general public on the back of what Bob and Mark have just said?

no. B&Q etc have already said they will still sell the complete range of all electrical and plumbing fittings to the general public

one of the problems with the big superstores is that they dont care who they sell what to, it is not against the law to sell or buy the items, only to install them.
One difference with you though Mark is that you have a good electrical background, many people have know idea at all, these are primarily the people that the law is issued for, also i come accross this when people have bought houses from these DIY experts and have then had to pay alot of moeny to have bodged work corrected, these are the people the law has been made to protect, therefore if a property owner does come accross such bodged work they now have some course of redress on either the owner or contracter in question

should also have added, i have never came acrross an instance of somebody digging there garden and leaving a potentially dangerous situation, on the other hand i have inspected many potential gas and electrical instalations and been asked to give a report.
i can also see what you mean by big brother telling you what you can and cant do.........but surely when it could be someones life we are talking about it raises the stakes somewhat

ahh yes \'experts\' I\'ve come across a few in me time, especially the \"i\'m a coimputer expert\" variety

if you want something doing what you need is a professional not an expert

I agree to a point bob, but if you expanded that a bit, nothing more dangerous than motor cars, but everyone has repaired a car at some time, none of whom were qualified, wiring your house is only likely to ccause damage to anyone inside it. driving a car you\'ve got a lot more targets. So why not prevent everyone from fixing cars.

I don\'t have a problem with the fact that there are some eejits out there, when I bought this house the switches in the kitchen were all switch neutral, which I discoverd when changing a bulb, woke me up mind.

But what happened to personal responsibility. If you want to screw why shouldn\'t you do it yourself .

excellent point about the car thing, never thought about that one...........................what was the original topic about ?? lol lol

that must have been before i got on my high horse then......................................hope he doesnt do DIY aswell then, especially heating and electrics............haa haa

good job ive just finished all mine ,no idea what this has to do with some bloke nicking davys cousins rod :o

i think there taking the mick myself ,i mean theres nowt difficult in say adding a spur or a socket into the ring main or even fitting a shower to a 30 amp circuit ,mind i wouldnt let wor lass fit a plug lol

define competent lol ,i can see a lot of council lads getting laid off

plumbing will be next on the list youl not be able to fit new taps next :casstet:

bob if you want a copy of the new part P regulation PM me with your home address will send you a copy

dont forget about energy efficiency lol

As a spark who served his time 40 years ago (5years 8months) and am now looking forward to retirement in a few years time, I have decided it would not be worth my while spending the money to get the necessary certification. So without this certification am I now considered to be incompetent ?? I have dozens of customers who would argue otherwise.

bri just read your post mate, dont mean to be funny but i hear comments like that every day of the week.

just to enlighten you, i work in the education sector and hear comments like thee above quite often. If it was not for the likes of the IEE and Corgi this country would be in a real state.

it would be very intresting to see if the work that is peformed say on an a electric shower by average joe was installed up to current electric and water regulations, i doubt very much it would be.

as for working on water (fitting taps) correct mate not be long with the new GWINTO standards (gas, water) most people think they can fit an outside tap but will it be fitted to current water regulations eg will it prevent back siphonage if not cross contamination will be caused with your drinking water.

its the ignorance of the public that give tradesmen/women a bad name i must agree that there are a lot of cowboys/girls in the industry but it is my job and others to ensure that there time in the construction industry will be very short.

The time and training that apprentices dedicate to become a compotent Plumber/Gas engineer is unreal most people say \" aye gone have the good old days of real trades\" little do they realise that to obtain a NVQ Level 3 in Plumbing is no easy feat.

Corgi Registered Gas installers (RIP I HEAR) we deserve every penny we charge not only for the courses of study we have to cover but for the pressure and regulations that we have to keep to. most people forget that we are working with an explosive material (gas) you would not beleive the accidents that have been caused through public people thinking that they can do it.........

A word of advice if you want to risk your life and your family then go for it but for the sake of a few quid you can be sure to wake up in the moring...........

cheers john
