A Question from my Six Yr Old Littl`n

Cheers Mark - i take it,that this is the easy version to explain, LMCO

just ever so slightly slower than the speed of light! (well the electrons do anyway) around 186,000 miles per second so from london the toon would take about 0.0016 seconds

but bizzarely....

electrical charge (measured in Coulombs) as a component of power moves really slowly.... about a millimetre a second

basically because you need gazillions of electrons to make 1 Coulomb of charge, and the electrons are nice and polite and travel in single file!

I knew there's was a reason I did a degree all those years ago!

and cheers all the rest who answered

Watch out for next weeks Big question, on how to keep dads busy answering questions that we wished we had asked our dads LOL

Electricity going down a wire is not like a pea being blown down a straw it is more like a hose already full of water. If you put a bit extra water in at one end some gets pushed out of the other end almost instantly I think.

basically, but if its an empty hose to start with.......
