A sneaky 45mins @ Johnsons Rock

I dropped my daughter of at girls brigade tonight so I had an hour and a half before I had to pick her up. My gear was still in the car from this morning so I decided to head back down to Johnsons Rock in search of a bigger Pollack.

I got there about 6.15pm there were a couple of lads float fishing on the next shelf along.

2nd cast had a rod bending bite but whatever it was escaped after a couple of seconds fighting. 3rd cast another good bite with the same result.

5th cast with the spinner about 20ft away from me, I see this fish come out of the depths almost vertically take the spinner and head vertically down again, with a big bend in the rod. After a short fight I pulled a 40cm coley out. Didn't think coley's fought that hard until tonight.

Not a bad 45mins tonight and I seem to be on a roll.

Well done mate, i was fishing that exact same spot as you about half an hour before u came, think it was u that i seen as i was leaveing.
I fished to the right were the lads were floating, then yr spot then to the left of that again, with nothing showing an interest to my spinners

not a lot of people bother trying with a lure off the rocks locally. especially for pollock.

Lure fishing, LRF, HRF etc seems to be taking a while to catch on up here. Although there are still quite a lot of anglers doing it and i was surprised by the actual ammount, you still get queer looks when you turn up somewhere with your 'Light Gear' trying to entice some fish. I prefer this style of fishing anyday as it's much more tactile, visual and makes fishing more fun (for me anyway). Don't get me wrong I love lobbing a big ball of peeler into the kelp too, personally speaking I just get a greater sense of satisfaction from Lure fishing.

We have a stretch of coastline which has an abundance of fish holding features really close in. It's really just a matter of spending the time to go and look and try. It's took me two very frustrating years of blanking to start to get a sense of where to go and when to go, and more importantly what to do when your there! I'm learning loads more each time I go out. So a blank for me is just another learning experience. That's the way you need to approach it, because you do get a lot of blanks. Go with optimism not expectation.

I generally try to go, look and fish a new mark at Low Water so I can get a good understanding of the terrain and potential fish holding features. Then I'll try again over high water. You lose far less gear this way and you soon build up a picture of where the hotspots are. Some times only moving a few feet or casting in a different direction will pick something up or change the outcome and that's without adding the complexity of the various different lures to try.

Anyway that's enough of me rattling on. I'm happy that I have managed to share my experience and with it managed to slightly alter perceptions.

north of the tyne we expect to look for pollock with lures, same as south of the tees.

in those area theres cliffs at the waters edge and deeper water.

i,ve always thought that there must be fish in between even if the waters a little shallower. there obviously is.

previously most peoples idea of spinning or using lures has solely been for mackerel and more recently bass. [locally]

theres probably always been a few small pollock off the rock edges.
