A strange report

This has to be the strangest report I've posted on here .....

While fishing outside the Copthorne Hotel on the Quayside my mate pulled in what he described to me as a " long thinnish fish which looked like it had vampire type teeth " , we thought it might have been some sort of hybrid at first .

Funnily enough I was watching Matt Hayes over the other day on TV ,he caught a a canny Zander which he described as the Dracula of the freshwater fish world due to its two "fanglike " teeth .

So thinking about it the fish could possibly have come down river from somewhere like the Derwent !!!

Could it have been a wolf fish?

most prob. a catfish. zander ain't long and thin and don't live in salt water

Pike perhaps? There are a few (although not many) of them in the Tyne and they can cope perfectly well with brackish water.

Was it anything like below(link),theres butter fish,blennies,eel pouts which all look funny.

could have been the whiskey na i think its a cross between a zander and .......
i dont know mate have you got a pic then would be easier

No pics unfortunately ,if it had been a wolf fish we'd have known so that discounts that one , and the Zander that I looked at on telly was actually canny long and thin .. admitedly most aren't as thin ...anyway it's a strange thing to see and kept him talking for ages

never heard of any zander in the tyne or any place north of leeds to be honest , will up the number of folks fishing there if some one has added some ,but they will have skinny little rods and egg beater reels with dead baits

did it have 2 dorsal fins front one very spiny like a perch ? was the mouth huge and flattish with 2 million teeth or did it just have the 2 main teeth you could notice ?

Strange fish ???

Could be any of a multitude of species, viper fish, rat tail - any of the angler fish species - shame you did not get a picture. In the past many strange fish have turned up on the rivers of the East Coast, especially were the larger trawlers unload. All sorts of beasties have been dumped from these vessel's and strangely enough they survive.
