Me mate Mark got in from surfing at about half 5 last night and told me the sea was right up. We hadn't been out fishing for a week so we decided on a trip out to try our luck. We didn't have ny bait though as this was last minute so went down to asda to see what might work.
Ended up with a bag of king prawns and a pack of prepared squid. The squid was actually pretty decent, it had been skinned, guts and plastic pulled out and the heads chopped off and tucked inside the body.
Went down for about half 8 which was three hours before low tide. Weather was pretty grim with a strong south eaterly and drizzle. Fished the little bay for about an hour while the tide was still in a ways and nowt much happened. I got one big bang and then slack line but didn't feel anything when I caught up with it. Not sure if it was tide, wind, weed or fish that pulled me lead out.
Once the tide dropped a bit moved onto North Wilkies that looked like it should definately fish. Wind was hard work though and you had to punch your cast a bit to get it out.
After about an hour and a half Mark got a few knocks and brought in a Codling just under two pounds. After that he got a few more knocks, I didn't get a sniff.
Packed up about half eleven and headed home. 6th blank in a row for me, all fished about five feet from Mark with same bait, rigs and casts. He's caught every time I think. Brilliant.
When he gutted the fish he found it stuffed with Sandeels. We did notice quite a few birds circling about when we were fishing, must have been a shoal of them in that brought the Codling in.
Not a total disaster though as we found an emergency bait and I had only my second night out with a multiplier after switching from F/S and didn't have any problems with it at all, even with the gale blowing. Not out untill the weekend now, when I need to catch a #@"*#~? fish.
