Anybody know if there was ever a 6500 made in the 80`s to 90`s with red side plates?i`m guessing it`s a 6000...Got a reel i`ve just dug out in bits seems the teeth on the main gear are stripped so gonna fix it up.Has`nt got a ratchet either take it must be an early model,cheers lads.

hi you can date the abu's by the niumber on the reel seat foot.

Yes a 6000 mate,it will be the slower speed retrieve model does it have a small paddle handle ?.
These a worth rebuilding as ABU built proper reels then.
Have a look at what you need I have a massive toolbox full of old 65s and 6000 bits.Does the spool have a revolving spindle cos i've also got spare spools for this model.

That's right Terry but they also did have bearings fitted,the bearing were the self aligning with oval outer housings,same od as now but smaller id because of the revolving spool spindle.

Hi lads thanks for the replies,it`s got a twin handle,4 points on the star drag...spool is the one with the centrifugal pins on and plastic cog on far end...i assume this spool is`nt the origional one for the reel as correct me if i`m wrong that plastic cog is used in conjunction with the ratchet is that correct?

still got a set of the self aligning bearings harry.i should of kept my 6500 ct off yrs ago i prefer them in sidewinds good on clean beaches for me.

Yeah, good little reels.
Iv'e still got a matching pair of original silver 6500ct in their leather cases
Iv'e just got them put away and would never use them now,but I also would never part with them.
They are in mint condition with each having a spare spool.Spools were 3 piece
not machined from a solid block as they are now.
I remember buying them from Pips at Durham some years ago.
HaHa forgot all about the level wind harry,just found that as well,must`ve took that off.Well i`m going to either chop the frame to convert it to CT,or just buy a new cage.

My advice to you would to rebuild this reel as near to original specifcation as possible,it's got a levelwind...then refit it.
What you have got is a quaility made ABU spinning salmon reel and is some 30 or 40 years old.
It would be a great shame to butcher this reel to convert it to something it
never was.
By all means renew parts/replace worn damaged bits but try and keep it oringnal as possible and you will find it will be worth a lot more like that than
cut and shove model.
when its restored put it away and keep it.
you can buy a 2nd hand modern reel for 30 notes.
