lads,

looking for some brakes for my abu just realised i have none in, i know there are different ones so can anyone recomend any.

casting is fine until i try and put a lot of power and then just nest up so brake will hopefully fix this.

Cheers

If you live north of the tyne...call into ID fishing and see Ronny he'll sort brake blocks for you.

South....Rutherfords in Sunderland Andy will stock the blocks you want.

Might be a daft question but do you have your mag on full when casting as it shouldn't be even lifting with all the magnets in and on full

If you can't source the blocks easily PM me.

I have two or three pairs (somewhere) and if you come unstuck I can pop a pair in the post.

i bought the reel 2nd hand m8 only has two magnets in and yes i do have them on full. was never an issue casting as used to overhead thump, now i am casting further with otg cast but want to put a bit more in so i can try and hit the 200 yards mark, hitting 150 yards now but i know i have a lot more distance if it wasnt for the birds nests. was told off ARC brake blocks will help.

If I was you I'd ask for additional magnets as well as or instead of brake blocks.

If you put the mag adjuster on 3 and leave it there you should never get a nest even with no brake blocks fitted. Not that I'm recommending that method for maximum distance, but it is safe and predictable.

I usually leave one brake block in and back the mag off to just over 2, but no brake blocks and mag on 3 is a solid setup, provided you have a full set of mags in.

Fewer magnets means less magnetic braking (sorry for stating the obvious) so having a full compliment of magnets and setting the mag adjuster to 3 ought to get you where you need to be, with or without brake blocks.

The magnets aren't expensive, and if you get them (as well as the blocks) you can start taking them out one at a time if you need to speed the reel up.

Frankly, one or no blocks and mag adjuster on 3 is going to throw a lead a very, very long way if you get your bit right.

The magnets are usually alternated north/south polarity so if you remove any you should use a permanent marker to mark the outward facing surface in case you need to put them back in.

The reel is simply running too fast and not providing sufficient braking for safe and controlled casting.

It's up to you of course, but if you start with blocks in and a full set of magnets you can always shed one or both blocks and a magnet or two once you start hitting the coast of Norway with your casts...

Go-faster reels. Got to love them

;)

EDIT: I meant to add that once you have the trick of distance casting with brakes and/or a full set of magnets, try adjusting the mag throughout the cast before you start taking stuff out of your reel. Throttling up/backing off throughout the cast is where you can gain yards just my allowing the mags to slow down the spool as it changes speed as its diameter/speed changes when line feeds off it.

i think i will try a full set of mags then for now, i had the settings down to tee, but then cleaned bearings and put some red rocket fuel in only 1 drop as instructed, any idea where i can get a couple of mags at all quickly,

Give ID a call and ask before you make the trip whether they have any.

Most tackle shops keep a full range of spares for common reels so I doubt you will have any problems sourcing them.

I get almost all of my stuff from John at Sport & Leisure in Blyth, or Simon at Lewis Tackle Supplies (formerly Temples) of Whitley Bay. Between them I don't think I've ever asked for something they couldn't sort out.

i will give lewis a call as i go there a lot for bait etc i did ask when i was last in for the brake blocks but didnt have any in never give it a though of more mags tbh something i just overlooked, dying to get them in now so i can see how far i can blast a weight out. just another things how much sideways movement do you have on your spool?

My rule of thumb (pun intended) is enough spool movement that I can feel it (only just) but not see it.

Basically I back off the adjuster a shade at a time until I can just feel a very slight click when thumbing the spool side-to-side.

After that I mess with brakes or brakes/mags for casting control.

I'm no expert with mag reels mind, so hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in before I do any more damage :)

If you can't find any mags quickly I should be out at King Edward's Bay at Tynemouth tonight. I put a full new set of mags into my Abu 6500 CT C3 Mag High Speed last week and I still have three of the originals in a bag - they've only been cast few times, so you'd be welcome to them if it will get you up and running quickly.

I prefer a 7000 for general fishing or for distance work over cleaner ground a standard 6500C3, Rocket or Ultra Cast is hard to beat in my book. My mag Abu reels rarely get any rod time at all

Like I say though, I'm no expert and everyone does it their own way (with varying degrees of success ;))

well i could cycle down tonight if its ok with you and meet you at king eddies not too far from me tbh.

what time would you be there until. never fished king eddies before is it any good? i have the 6500 CT rocket use it for my beach fishing at the mo and sl30sh for the heaver ground but thinking of magging my sl30sh.

I'll PM you with my mobile number: I won't know until later this evening what time I will be there.

I've no idea what the bay fishes like these days - it's been about 15 years since I was last there.

I think you have a couple of realistic options:

1. add one brake block which should give sufficient braking with the mags you have remaining

2. add more mags and hope that they are enough to control the reel

Given you have used a faster lubricant you may still find the reel runs too fast with all mags installed.

I use mine out of the box with no modifications, standard Abu reel oil and one brake block fitted, and they run far better than I can cast them.

A lot of big casters use oil/grease to help throttle and control reel speed - a reel running too fast is nothing more than a nuisance.

Ok m8 thanks lot for the info i will pm u my number i will go with a full set of mags for now see how that works if still not enough i will add the 1 block then see how i go. good luck tonight at the beach only ever fished blyth beach really.
