abu 7000

abu dont actually make any 7000 size reel without a levelwind, strange, i know, but true.quite easy to just take the levelwind off,the bar over the spool usually doesnt cause too much interfierance.

I\'ve just done what Ralph says and use it for uptiding. No problems with casting or retrieve.

Thanks,
Jeff.

Are these Abu Sevens inferior to the original 7000\'s??? they look identical but seem to be near half the price, think ID are selling them on ebay for £59.99.

Have had an ABU Seven for a good few years now. First thing I did was to take off the level wind mechanism. Like Ralph says, the top bar doesn\'t interfer too much. These reels have (or had) brass bushes for the spool to ride on. Get rid of them and replace with some bearings and it turns into a bloody good reel. Word of warning though - if you put bearings in be careful with the line level. As the spool runs a lot faster I got loads of nests at first but through trial and error eventually got it sussed by stripping off a bit of line. Its a bit battered on the outside now but the internals are still ok. All in all can\'t complain for what I paid for it and the use I\'ve had out of it.

only difference between the abu 7 and the 7000 are that the 7 has cheeper side plates and it has a one year warrenty instead of a 2.

went in rutherfords he said abu dont do ct cages for 7000s anymore he had a look at my reel and said taking off the level wind shouldnt be a problem he reccomended i get a new spool for it he was very happy wen i left cos i bought a new reel aswell 7200 let you know how it peforms thanks for everybodys help

Crack off, you may be right m8, I may have misunderstood the guy who was telling me about the one he bought and was back in the shop 3 times in a month for the same reason, gears nacked. He got exchanged each time no quibbles.

There was a problem with the gears on the 7200 as well, the gear which drives the spool is made of to different metals and were not a good fit therefore when pressure was applied the brass gear spun round the steel causing drive to the spool to be lost.
ABU know about this and were replacing the gear under warranty.

hope this helps

Gwyn

had a 7000. Gears collapsed first bit of stress. Got it replaced, went fishing ditto. got it replaced went fishing ditto - got so cheesed off I stuck me slosh on and used the ABU as a sinker and blasted it toward the horizon!

wouldn\'t fancy any abu reel after that

The Abu 7 uses bushes [ old technology] rather that bearings ,I\'ve had no bother with mine and got it on e bay for £50 from ID ,a lucky bid I think they\'d just got them in, anyway it\'s not got the spec or looks of my 7500.

Dont forget if you remove the level wind to remove the drive worm and the little cog that drives it, otherwise you defeat the object. Could you not use a 7500 ct cage? I seem to remember trying this once. I think it may work.

7500 ct is a nice reel if you get a good one. some seize up winding in small codling. the sideplates also corrode to nothing in just a couple of years. the handles also do the same. Ive put 7000 synchro sidplates on mine and had my m8 build me a stainless handle. Beautiful reel all the same.
