Due to being a lefty there's not a great option in terms of reels so the 7001i is kind of my only option for a rough ground reel . Dilemma I have is the old Swedish ones are hard to get hold of and the one I've got chance of purchasing is Chinese built!!!
Are they as poor quality as folk say they are or has there been a case of Chinese whispers with there reputation?

They are poor, especially the 7000s - however the Akios versions seem to get much better reviews and they do left hand wind versions as well (can't remember the model no. off the top of my head I'm afraid).

Have funny feeling akios only do the s line in the 651 lefty hand and couple of shuttles , the 757 is next size up I couldn't see a Lh version

Looks like you're right - I was sure someone showed me a LH version but might have been one of the smaller models. I'm sure there are one or two other LH reels out there apart from the ABUs…I'll keep racking the old brain..!

I think I was thinking of these..Avet not Akios - if you check the options boxes you'll see the LH options; usually you just don't get the choice of colours that are available in RH models. I think the MXJ5.3MC is about the same size as the 7000 series.

Avet Magnetic Control Casting Reels

Never used an Avet myself but they do seem to have a good reputation and strong following.

got the akios sportcast 651 scm l/h,very nice reels, bit smaller than the abu 7001i {got 2}you should get a bag @ power handle f.o.c.with the akios.got mine from fishtec.ps if you join at fishtec £5 for 1year,you get 10% off your order,so you will save a further £18 of your order -£5 joining fee, thats what i did.

true mate but did say rough ground reel and 7001i is only option just market flooded with Chinese made ones now , the 651 ctm is a little bit more robust than me 6501

not sure, had them over 10 years now, both in very good condition still, havent got level wind on them.think there swedish got them when they 1st come out. so im sure mr gforce, will know the year. one clever man imo.

I have a Chinese one had it for 3years used it up isle of sky 3 days of pulling 10 pound spur dogs no problem use it round here for rough ground still going ok

Being that age guess they will be Swedish made
Need to know if Chinese ones really that bad????

me dad uses a rh Chinese build and it works, that's where it ends , my original 7000 syncro wipes the floor with it though for casting, due to the syncro having bearings instead of brass bushes and for build quality . would I buy a modern 7000i ?? simple answer no .

you'd be just as better off with a lh okuma tbh .
