ABU reel

I've always been a Daiwa/Penn reel user but am thinking of getting myself an ABU. Can anyone give me any advice on which model (out of the box) is best for out and out distance chucking. Any help much appreciated.

My favourite is the blue Elite. No mag brakes, but with one fibre brake block in it goes a mile. The Abus aren't as powerful as the Penns and Daiwas but I think they cast better straight out of the box.

What do you mean by powerful mate?

I mean the gearing and the clutch are more heavy duty on the Penn/Daiwa than the Abus. Also the retrieve is faster. I prefer the Abu for long casting on clean ground or cleaner spots on the river but I would use the Slosh 20 for rougher stuff, say the pier. Some of the newer Abu 6500 models have the 6:1 retrieve but the Slosh definitely pulls in faster.

OK mate, thats what I thought you meant but wanted to be sure. Like I said in the original post this is just about distance capability so not bothered about retrieve ratios and cranking. What's the cost of one of them mate?

If you are talking about the Elite. Check out Ebay as prices for Abu reels vary wildly. Make sure it is Made In Sweden as the far east ones are tat. I got mine second hand mint for £60 but that was 7 years ago. That replaced the first one that I had that I dropped from quite a height:(

Still got a few quid towards the replacement with the parts that were ok. Gutted about smashing it at the time as it had been my first proper casting reel and I'd had that one about 6 years.

Abu = ****e unless clean ground or casting only

or as they were made for fresh water plug/spinner casting lol

Yer I bought a second hand elite for the field, good reel av put a knoby on it changed the bearings to abec5's n use a thin oil, now it spins for 12secs with mag on full and 1min 50secs completely off, just the biz
Reel cost me £50 (mint condition) bearings were about £8 a pair
You can pick up a decent reel mate for half the cost of a new one
