Have just bought a Boat Rod - Greys GT Series 30lb-50lb and in need of a decent multiplier. I have been recommended the Daiwa Sl30sh ?

Anyone else have any advice in relation to the type of reel I need and from experience what should I be looking for ?

Price wise willing to pay around £70.

and once I get it what line should I be using and is braid a good option ?

Thanks

You'd be better off with a lever drag for the boat if you can afford one.

Penn 225LD or Shimano TLD15s are good reels.

I wouldn't use anything other than braid on the boat, Dynon 3000 55lb is very popular. :)

You can pick up a diawa saltist second hand for £70 if you shop about. I use my 30 for the cliffs and rocks but its meant as a boat reel.

Charter special

Charter special

as above the 2000ld charter specials for me also have a couple of 1000ld's

best reels i have ever had better than my tld 20's

Sean

I won a Penn 240 GTO in a compo raffle last year. Loaded with 50lb mono and yet to try.9probs with my 50 lb boat rod.
I also have an old Abu 7000 loaded with 30lb mono which is ok but for light sport i bought a new Diawa with depth counter on and loaded with 30lb braid.Great with a 12-20lb rod.
Using braid is good until you get into a tangle.

Mick.

I agree with Keith a leverdrag multiplier will allow you to fish most situations when boat fishing BUT, you need to know what type of boat fishing you are going to do.
1,Are you boat fishing with a friend that owns his boat and a limited number of friends fishing with you, this is the best option when you first start.
2,Or are you planning a trip on a charter boat and would be up to 12 anglers dropping lines.
3,Or wreck fishing on a charter boat with again lots of anglers.
The point I am making is , if you wreck fishing on a charter boat, you use Braid but others use mono, tangles and tempers go together, its best to try and use the same line and wieghts (approx)as the rest of the party.
Thats where two reels come in,one loaded with say 30/40lb mono for general mixed ground fishing, the other reel(leverdrag)loaded with braid for deep water wreck fishing.
If you book a charter boat ask the skipper what ground and what gear should you use before you arrive to board,he will thank you and also will the rest of the charter anglers.

some good points there hb and great potential to open a can of worms lol

I have fished on charter boats with 12/20 class gear and super braid next to a typical 70/80's veteran with his 50lb green fibre glass rod and penn senator 6/0 with 50lb line. Neither of us is right or wrong with choice of gear but should the skipper take a bit responsibility here to maintain harmony on deck?

Spot on with Keith B both reel and braid ........

However great information from harry b if you can manage the two options.

Pardon my ignorance but what is the difference between lever drag and the others?

In my original post I mentioned the Sl30sh is this a good option or not ?

As per the comments so far the opinion is strong towards a lever drag reel (hence the questions above).

In which case the Shimano TLD, Okuma Magnetix 30 or Penn 225 ?

I have no idea about the technicalities between the types of reel if somenone could help on that score also it would be appreciated.

In relation to the boat fishing - my first trip is with a group of 10 out of Amble I believe on the 'upholder' so really I will be guided by the group I am with and of course the skipper of the boat. So as to what type of boat fishing I cannot answer that one at this stage but now that I know about the various types (thanks Harry Barker) I will make some enquires.

When fishing on the boats what rigs do you use ? Pirks ? Lures ?

Jeez and I thought beach fishing was a mine field

The slosh 30 reel is bullet proof mate, also is a good casting reel as well,so would do you just fine for boat n shore.Look in" for sale" below Sottys selling a slosh30 for 25notes,come on its a bargin.
A leverdrag reel works just the same as a stardrag reel, the differance is...
on a leverdrag as the name implys the tension clutch can be adjusted during the fight, these reels(penn of the usa)were the first manufacturers of leverdrag.
These reels were used for big game fishing for shark and marlin fishing under trolling conditions so the angler could ease the tension during the fight.
The price of the Penn Internatonal say a 8/0 would cost you £500plus way back in the 1980s.
They became very popular so other manufacters started to make them.
And in the Uk lots are to be had now £120-400.
I used a leverdrag called a polacancy made in south africa it was a poormans Penn in the 1990s for tope fishing in luce bay.Had it loaded with 20lb nylon and caught tope up to 56lb.Never ever lost a fish to being bullyed.
What end gear do you use ? well you need to build up your stock over the weeks/months.Yuo will need pirks and all sorts of end gear but it will come with time.(again Scottys got 2nd hand gear for sale).
The big advantage you have is the spring and summer time is on its way so you will have time to build you stock.
All the best with your boat fishing mate its a great sport.
