advice on a fixed spool

none of them, good for casting but cant lift fish up pier walls ;-) learning to use a multiplier is the best thing you will ever do, fixed spools these days on a long rod can cast the distance and thats about it they dont have any lifting power at all iv even seen £150 fixed spool handle snap off the lift of a 5lb cod ;-( just my opinion :D

I use okoma 60 dist
and boy does it go far got the 50 as well and is just as good.
reeling in is like watching a speed boat on water as it flys in
as for lifting these will pull the plug out the sea as far as I have seen.
maki season 6 on line and it whipped them in and pulledand lifted then no probs :)

Am not sure in that price range but the penn afinity well I think thats the correct name,
at around £100 its supposed to be the dogs bollacks

i personally dont rate them for lifting like handle constructions are a weak point a pin on a pinnion if you think of the strongest weight pullers in the world a multiplier is a smaller version of an industrial winch, the most crucial point of landing a fish is the lift it has to be fast and trouble free hit the wall and its gone i cudnt think of a worst time for a reel to go tits up ;-0

Monkey hanger. I have a avet sx, Penn trq 15, Penn fathom 15, Penn 535 and a 525. Just fancy a fixed spool reel

they mint for casting, i use daiwa basias for carp fishing and they are extremely powerfull iv had cats to 34lb on them but thats playing a fish on level ground they cudnt lift a fish and i wudnt like to try it either £625 each the 3 of them cost more than my work van ;-) the missus wasnt happy but thats fishing

I was talkn to gary pye in nets on sat as I've been looking for a new fixed spool n he used the penn afinity on hawthorn point, think he said he uses 20lb braid main with 80lb braid leader and never had any problems lifting fish

If you want max casting distance go for the penn affinity or if more grunt is required the penn battle, also fin nor reels are worth a look. All will handle heavy ground fishing and can be used on the cliffs never mind a pier and are a lot less than £200/£300, shimano's do some nice reels as well bit more expensive than Penn's.

Disagree mate - Its the rod that lifts the fish - and any decent fish of size is usually hand balled up a pier wall etc, or a drop net used for those of us lucky enough to catch a decent size fish nowadays. Fished now for over 50 years and have used, handlines, fibre glass rods, and new state of the art carbon rods together with a multitude of reels of both fixed spool and multiplier type - current multi reels I use are the Penn 525 mag, but still use the old school twin speed Abu 9000c, & Abu 8500, and a Okuma Magnatex, Fixed spools are the Penn 850 , & Simano XTR RA 6000 . Never ever had a any problem with a reel coping with a fish. As I say when lifting a decent size fish then hand ball or drop net is usually the best way. As always its horses for courses depending on the venue to be fished and then deciding what gear best suits the venue..... Beach, Pier, Rock edge, Cliff etc.

Have a look at the Shimano aerlex xsa in 7000 or 8000 sizes.Specially designed for salt water they are a super strong pleasure to use and for around £80 are a great buy.

I've just bought a penn affinity 7000 and loaded it with 50lb spider wire and really can't fault it ! capable of casting a long long way and when you pull in fast you can get a 6oz lead skimming
along the top a good 40 yards out so really does
lift your gear up and away from snags sharpish , I'm probably gonna buy another one later and get shot of my multis !

Another one for the penn surfblaster 8000 here. I've got ultima 35lb braid on mine and it flys off the reel. The lads who have mentioned the retrieve on them aren't wrong. I'm sure I read it pulls in 1 metre per turn of the handle.
