:question:I currently use my old Abu 9000C and was looking at getting a more up to date reel with level wind. I was thinking about the Shimano and Penn range of reels but would really appreciate any info / advice anyone can give, Is there any other types on the market that are popular with boat anglers.

just a very personal opinion:exclam: if i was king:rolleyes: i wouldnt allow level winds on boats:exclam:

the reel you want is a tld 15(i think most of them have level winds, other than that a top notch reel, you should get at least £40 for your abu, another £60 will get you the tld, then get some dynon 3000 50 lb braid and your sorted

i use abu 9000 myself for boat fishing

I use abu 7001i's , they are the left hand version of the 7000i , they are fine for boat fishing but don't seem to be the very best quality , I'm looking at an avet or snowbee deep blue for next year because they are solid aluminium and should last my lifetime at least , the one thing that is putting me off them is the lack of level wind , so I too am intrigued as to why you would ban level winds Duncan

It's a level wind for me as well Duncan! I have got two of those Okuma soltera's and can't complain, they have been great the last two seasons and have lever drag and level wind.

Graham.

:D:DLEVEL WIND lazy the lot of you:exclam::exclam::exclam

no offence meant:exclam::exclam:

as said something else to go wrong, especially on "entry level"reels, and also for the line to get wrapped around the bottom end of it

BUT the main reason:D have you ever heard anyone sqeeeeeeeeeal, when their finger is trapped between the level wind and side plate:question::question:

if i were king:exclam::rolleyes: you know the rest:D:D:D

Yes , done that a few times recently

Haven't had the "pleasure" of that experience, but now that I know it's possible no doubt I will

I think I'll get an avet , they look the business and have a good reputation for quality , just have to work out what size is equivalent to a 7000 abu now.
MXL , I think

Anybody got any opinions on two speed reels? Are they worth having

Hello,
I like levelwinds when using braid, I have a saltist 40 levelwind and can't fault it.
I think that if you get your fingers trapped in the levelwind then you deserve it.

Regards Ian

Level winds are great when using braid, but as been said, the braid often goes around the bottom of the level wind, and if you have just hooked a decent fish, it's a bugger to release in order to reel in. The problem happens when the sinker/lure hits bottom and you haven't stopped the spool quick enough, and a loop of line finds it's way round the guide.

:D:Dlove it ian,but have extracted 1 or 2 over the years, it aint nice:(

Hello lingking, I've just read my post......I sounded a bit harsh didn't I....sorry mate I didn't mean it like that.
As long as they weren't your fingers then that's ok Ha Ha!!

Canman and yourself are right though, they're fine but you need to take a bit more care especialy when dropping down.

Regards and Tightlines, Ian.

Shimano for me, tekota 500LC. Toughest reel I've used since the penn senator days. Not the cheapest but quality doesn't come cheap, it has level wind (and line counter). Prefer levelwind now, it stops you getting cuts in the thumb with braid!

I think you said it all in one post LK .... agree 1000% with those comments ........

Shimano TLD 15 (it's not got a level wind :) ) all the time for me.... and, as Dunk said, with 55lb white Dynon 3000 braid ..... there can be only one :D (braid)

norm

Haven’t you looked at Whiplash braid yet Norman? It’s thinner than Dynon but I don’t know how it compares for durability.

Cheers everyone for response, probably go for the Shimano as mentioned, and get sorted for next season - in the meantime I will carry on with my ABU 9000 (Had it since the 70's but it's a bit tired now I think:mad:), Just Hope Santa's listening :D

aye ray ref 2speed reels, ive had a couple of two speed 9000,they never seemed to work:confused:,but they were 25+ years old:exclam:

the idea appeals to me,and im sure modern kit will work fine.

what would be better:question: would be one where you could "select" your rate of retrieve:)

i have a 10 inch one;) scarboro reel that is,and you can select retrieve rate on that:) but its very hard work even winding slowly:exclam::exclam:

I've got 4 rods and reels on the boat, 1 with level wind ( Shimano Charter Special ) and when i use it i still find my thumb tracking back and forth .
