advice on fishing at north shields fish quay

Big tides either side of low/high water.

You can fish all the way through on small tides.

Sept-oct best months for codlings.

A good chuck usually gives you a big advantage for codlings but not so necessary for coalies or whitings. It also avoids the snags.

same as walkway, canny chuck into the middle. Best IMO couple of hours before high water, October- December and crab as bait:)

What he says...it's as deep as anywhere round here out in the channel especially since they dredged it last year to accommodate the bigger ships - at low tide I'd guess 35ft at least in the channel. I like it best when the tide's about 1m-1.3m or so and generally fish last hour of the ebb & first few hours of the flood. Also fishes well over high tide when the whitings are in.

Doesn't matter what colour the water is on the surface, according to one of the divers I spoke to when they were fixing it up a couple of years ago it was like bisto on the surface but he told me it was crystal clear out in the channel.

Gary :)

last of the ebb & first of the flood single hook casting as far as you can with crab, baits don't have to be big either i prefer a 1/0 or 2/0 hook. Later on in the winter (dec jan) try lugworm, ragworm also fishes well when the ragworm are spawning in the river (you can see the worms swiming in the shallows and being washed up on the middens beach)
The river also fishes best during daylight the fish seem to stop feeding as it pulls in dark although it can fish well at times during darkness, a lot of freshwater/floodwater in the river also puts the fish off
