Bit of a problem,,decided to change my line from 40lb to 25lb and try to fish with a shock leader..always fished straight through with 2 small leaders 1 for the hook and 1 for the weight.....

Could anyone give me some advice on how to set up with a shock leader bearing in mind i've only been fishing for about a year, in other words complete novice.....

Am i getting to far ahead of myself or is it fairky easy to set up?????

Cheers,
Darin....

basically you need to learn to tie a leader knot, theres a few diff ones people use as well, you dont say what reel your using, a multi or fixed spool, main thing you will find is less tide drag and wind movement on your line and an increase in distance you cast, as for leader length i use 6 turns on the spool, the length of the rod and my desired drop length, to the drop length i have a rig link and my rigs attach to that

hope this makes sense, no doubt others will have slightly differing ways and will reply soon

thats what i use like 6 turns and personal length for your drop. sometimes more when fishing off rocks..... not that i ever get anything that weights enough to need it lol

you may not need a leader if you only cast an overhead thump and check the last few feet of your main line every cast. That's how I fish, with clear 50lb hooklengths to combat cod teeth.

Thanks for that mate...I'm currently using a fixed spool not got as far as a multiplyer yet one step at a time ...lol...

have a look on utube type in knots or leeder knot there are some canny videos on that might help you
hope this helps

my advice if your fishing rock marks/mixed ground is to use 35lb straight through. You only need a shock leader if you fishing the beaches with a small reel and trying to cast as far as you can get.

Only need distance in daylight and from certain marks with certain baits. Fishin the rocks use 35-40lb straight through. If u use 40lb, then use 35lb for yr weak link to yr lead. I know people who use upto 60lb for there hooklength 4 cods teeth. (If u see one at the min let me know, please!) Shockleaders are used when distance is required and low diameter lines. However, i do tend to use a shockleader from the rocks as well but this is for abrasion purposes only as my weak link is only 30-35lb (everyones different)

Been out today with my mate. Not a bite between us. Getting fed up with it now. Was doing well prior to december!
