Advice on spinning

I was thinking of getting a spinning rod but I\'m not sure what casting weight to go for, does 20 - 60 gms sound reasonable for sea fishing?

My rods are casting weights to 50g and 37g and are both champion, recently bought a decent carp rod for going a bit heavier with., so 20-60 sounds about bang on for me

I\'ve had more fun with my spinning rods then owt else, when there\'s plenty of fish about I carry a 4-5wt, 7foot fly rod to up the fun factor.

Travel light and move around till you find the fish (when not on the pier that is)

for me, dexter wedges are real killers, and them silvered lead things that cost around a quid.

top tip, an old glasses case is brill for keeping ahandful of fpinners in when moving about, snaps shut when you want it to, and you can stick it in your pocket without hooking things you\'s rather not have hooked

fixed spool for me, only exception is if i want to chuck a sandeel/zip slider and 3oz lead towards the horizon

Depnding in what you wanna pay, there\'s some reel(!) bargains to be had.

I bought a ron thomson xenon reel on the advice of the shop owner last year and have to say for 20 quid it is an amazing piece of kit for the price, bearings on everything, mag spools, instant anti reverse and smooth as silk - a joy to use.

ABU 5000 as a multiplier for chucking bigger things, but been thinking about a shimano baitcaster for this year

Pat, to-day I bought a 11ft 2:25lb test curve carp rod and a f/s baitrunner reel all new for £30, only draw back just one spool with reel, it\'s for bass fishing mainly, if \"WE\" performs well this year I might buy a better one for 2005. I spin with 6lb line and 1oz (28gr) lures seldom heavier, for light weights like art/sandeels I use 28gr surface controller (carpmens tackle) with a 6ft trace to the eel underneath, this will cast as far as a 28gr spinner and for some unknown I\'ve never had the trace foul the main line. For spinners trebles take a bit of 15mm pipe lagging cut a 3/4 in thick piece off the end lay flat and cut in half
across the hole, take a half and bend it round the shank of treble then
push the barbs into it,your now tangle free. fishy1

My advice to you would be to get yourself a shakey odessa flattie. For 35 quid it performs way above that price. The rod is 11ft, really light to hold and the casting rating is 1-3 oz. Team it up with a shimano super baitrunner 10000 xte. The reel might be 100 quid but it is a superb piece of kit. With this set up I can whack out a rig a hell of a distance with a 2 oz lead while it still performs perfectly well for freelining a rag at my feet.

I\'ve got a Daiwa Salmon Spin 10ft which casts 20 - 60grm and found it superb. It will cast and handle what you want for shore fishing. although the rod cost me #80 I think it was extremely good value.

I use a fixed spool for spinning and have found the Okuma range excellent value for money. They range from single bearings quite cheap to 6 or 8 bearing reels which are very smooth and cost a bit more but better price than big name brands. Got a small one for 8lb line and another medium sized one which came with 2 spools loaded with 10lb and 15lb line. The 15lb also does the flattying in the summer. If you want a baitrunner they also do them for around #35. Would recommend anyone check them out especially if they only get a moderate use during the summer.

Quite a few have mentioned freshwater tackle, would there be an issue with corrosion using it in sea water?

only if you don\'t rinse it in fresh afterwards!

thought I\'d get my reels out and give em a seeing to recently, these wonderful new 6 ball bearing reels don\'t half make a funny grinding noise if you leave em full of saltwater! (DOH!)

otherwise no problem at all. I have one that I have been using exclusively for spinning at sea for about 5 years and is still good as new. If I hasn\'t had a salty soaking I don\'t even worry about cleaning it that much. If its been submerged though, strip it, rinse it and oil it.

remember where all the bits went though!!!iv got a f/s reel, \'silent\' anti reverse which makes a terriable noise, sounds like a piglet going through a mangle still works like, just cant figure out how to shut it up!
