Another day on northstar

The minimum size of cod set by the fisheries is 35cm.

I shore in a local club and the lads will keep these fish as they make up a bag weight.

I usually say any smaller than 40cm they go back but again its down the individual, i make sure im there when lads are bringing the fish in and measure them

it is totally down to the individual to practice how ever they fish, people should not be coming on forums dictating to others, as has been said it just discourages people posting photos and this ultimately is what keeps the forums alive,

Well....a few points

This is a forum and everybody is entitled an opinion...it's not a board where charter skippers are un-criticisable

This forum is NOT an advertising board for professionals but to exchange experiences by passionate sea anglers

Catch reports of professional charter boats can be seen on CBUK

This catch report annoys me as well, mainly because its obviously not right. It talks about "30 cod averaging 3-5lb and heaviest 7" ...I see under 20 fish and the majority sticking on one finger. Unless the 10 biggest fish are not on the photo the numbers don't match the image at all...surely there is no 7 pounder displayed!

Norbert mate, can't agree with you I'm afraid. I (and I know most other boat anglers) love reading all catch reports whether from charter or private skippers. Nowhere on the forum does it say professionals can't post. Also almost all the skippers I have been out with are passionate sea anglers, they just happen to also do it for a living. I am passionate about literature and theatre and I also do it for a living, that doesn't then negate me from being passionate.

If someone wants to post critical comments, fair enough. However the skipper on North Star has confirmed all fish were legal, therefore he should not be criticised. The thread is becoming boring now and I know if I had posted it, I would be a bit peeved by the negative replies.

"Keep posting the reports Jim, you know 95% of the members love to read them and we can't wait to get out with you in July. Hope our day is as good as the recent ones you have had. If so, Lynn and I will be happy bunnies!"

I think I have learned a few things from this
1 in the photo their is 5 anglers when actually I had 6 fishing that day the last one being my crewman and yes he had the heaviest fish however he had his gutted and filleted before we even set off for home.
2 i made the mistake of posting on this site as I genuinely thought people where interested so lesson learned in future I will keep the post for cbuk as was previously mentioned

ignore the negativity Jim. keep posting

I love these dogooders dont have the slightest incling as what size codling trawlers land i suggest you go down to any fish market and have a look every one of those fish on jims photo are legal and beleive me look a lot bigger than boxes upon boxes of tid codlings i seen been have landed commercially if you are worried about fish stocks the seal population off this coast probably eats 1000 times more cod than all the anglers on the northeast coast catch in a year they have exploded massively in population and are all eating machines welcome to the real world.

Well, what a mess this honest report has turned into...

I've fished on Jim's boat a few times and he's a great bloke, someone that wouldn't allow an undersized fish being kept. Let's keep in mind legal size is 35cm and they're landed day in day out by trawlers as well as being a club match weigh in fish.

If someone lands and wants to take a 35cm fish then that's their choice, if you fish regular and have your own boat then I guess you'd return that...again, that's a personal choice.

Such a shame that a good skipper posting report like this gets this much chew.

I think we should be having a go at the seals, they fish 24hrs a day...every day..

Fat little fu...rs

I'm with Jim on this one..having fished with him on more than one boat I know his stand on undersized fish..

well done on the catch lads nowt wrong with the size of them canny coddies photos can be a bit distorted sometimes and I think that's the case here

Ignore the remarks Jim, i dont think anyone thinks you would allow your license to be put at risk by allowing anglers to take undersize fish...

Keep up the good work...:)

keep puting the reports up jim makes good reading on the forum and the lads love there mug shots up there.

Sorry to stick my nose in here again but just wanted to also give full support to Jim  and keep on putting up the reports, I enjoyed the read.

The forum is getting proper bitchy lately

I've been reading the various responses and wow, this has sure stirred up a hornets nest although the skipper should take comfort that he's had so much support. One thing that made me laugh was the comment from one member that Drifter's blog was "pompous tosh". However, that same member then waded in with the above comment which certainly deserves a gold medal for pompous tosh.

I agree with Drifter about needing to protect our sport from its many threats including potential restrictions by MCZ, that’s something which needs all of our support. The way I read it, even Jim, North Star’s skipper suggests the same when he carefully measures the smaller fish that any party want to keep and is selective about what he takes.

As Drifter says, the camera can give a distorted view but not all of the fish look to be a size he would keep.
Drifter, like Jim is lucky that because he fishes often enough that he can be selective about the size limit he keeps and what goes back. Lads fishing less frequently may want to keep more of their catch which as long as they are legally size then comes down to personal preference and varies with circumstances.

It’s a shame the thread drifted off into personal digs and seal hunts, we all have other battles to fight. Keep posting Jim and Drifter, and keep fighting together for our sport.

maybe it was just that the lads in the pic were well padded out (ha ha) which made the fish look smaller, simply an optical illusion. or is it an optic illusion. whatever.

Kevin you are indeed the Henry Kissinger of Nesa and you make a valid point about the frequent boat fishermen having the luxury of being discerning with the size of their keepers.
