The weather was not too promising this morning (wind wise anyway) and as I had no set crew I decided to get up and see how it was ............ not a good Idea having no crew since the temptation to have another hour in kip always gets the better of you :)
woke up several times at unearthly hours and saw the wind howling so let it go another hour .... and another hour ... and .... LOL
Anyway finally got up and set out at 8.30 am ish (soooo late) when the wind seemed to have receeded a little.

First time out since the boat clean up so more of a test of all the leccy bits and see how she went more than serious fishing ..........

Got a nice surprise, (understand I had the wind behind me) but on opening up in the bay I got about another 5mph out of her . excellent, must be the sheen on the propeller LOL

Anyway - to the catch report ......................
stopped just out of the piers almost within casting distance and hooked up a manky last session trace of daylites, baited bottom with rag and squid and left the other three bare for a possible mackerel . . . . . . .
within 45 mins I had 5 nice codling to 4lb on board and still had the same old secondhand trace :)
there was a severe drift eastward so each pass was only about 5 mins but it seemed to be a fish every 2 drifts .....

met up with bert and keith and sless then moved on to another inshore mark about a mile away and instantly hooked into a couple of codling around the same size.
That was seven decent codling without losing a trace or weight ......... unbelievable ! :D .. especially in the westerly wind .....

decided to try the inshore wrecks (3 mile or so) but nothing at all on them (other than scotchies and mackerel and whiting)

Ended up as usual at St Marys but again nothing to take back, caught a nice wrass and a couple of small ling but they all went back to grow up.

So there you have it a great day out with seven codling to myself (thats enough fillets to keep me and the missus in cod & chips for a full week LOL ) but in all honesty I could have had the same catch and returned within the hour ..... just don`t understand why the wrecks are not producing ?

ps , good to see glenn in marina has got his motor sorted now .... when I say see I meant almost see , LOL through the oily patches haha looks like you had a hard day mate ..... congrats though ... :)

been itchin to get out regardless of recent reports, but work has put block on it. Completely ran out of cod in freezer!

goin pike fishin at the weekend with my lass to the lakes. invested in some new spinning gear, plugs, pike wire, spinners etc

thought id give this lot up ages ago! i'll get pics up if pos.
 
where abots did you pick the cod up norman ?
or is it a secret lol
theres not alot of action our end on wrecks eaither more on the rough ground but im sick all i want is a decent ling to munch on lmao

i norman, bit of a trying day, anyway she's fired up, oil,fuel filter change,
a note for perspective crew members of slinky kate, clean foot atire will be needed because of the new shag pile carpets fitted in cuddy:D , thanks also to keith for the advice and link;)

Well done on catching the fish Norman.
Can i ask Norman did you fillet the fish on board.
I was surprised to see this being done when i started going out on Maggie May.
A guy filleted his pollock and big Ling (12lb) whilst we were at sea.
A very polished art. Fish filleted then the fillets put in bucket of sea water.
On gettin back fillets in bin liners.

Second time out same thing two lads filleting their fish. I thought go on have a go so i did half of mine until an older angler helped me out.
Its much easier at home in the kitchen.

PS My mate reckons Ling taste like semollina and are not nice to eat. Does anyone keep and eat ling.
 
Mick mate don't listen to your pal!!

IMO Ling is has a lot more flavour than cod, it is firmer as well which makes it much better for cooking ie it doesn't flake to bits when you cook it.

Its awesome in a pie just make sure you skin and fillet it well.

To answer a couple

Yes I always fillet on board although usually in the quiet of the marina to save removal of fingers. It`s a lot easier presenting the missus with a bag of fillets than a bag of fish.

I`m not too keen on ling myself but i know many who prefer it (Just ask KeithB :) )
Ling is much more difficult to fillet (especially if it big) as is tends to slide around a bit more than cod and of course the sheer size sometimes makes it hard to get a clean cut, also the skin on Ling is very tough to get through.
 
Yep Ling is deffo better than tasteless cod, delicious deep fried in batter :p

We have no bother filleting ling, we just drag the box (or boxes :D ) to John the filleter's cabin - we're spoilt rotten, if John's not down the quay Sless aint bad with a blade either ;)

John gets the pick of the catch, but he reckons it's better filleted the next day so his usually waits till then.

Forgot to say Norman, Bert got a couple of canny ones (6.5lbs) just as you moved on.

Shame the other wrecks are not producing at the moment, seemed it was gonna be a bumber year till this spell of wet and windy weather hit.
 
I'm making Fish Pie, from the Ling i caught with Norman on his last trip out, this week so I'll be sure to let you all know how it tastes......have been assured by wise and respected NESA members that it's far superior to Cod...we shall wait and see ;)

I caught my first ever Ling last time out on Maggie May. It was all of 1lb. I was surprised when John punctured something in its throat which balooned up when we brought it up.
Apparantly when we returned the Ling John said it would die if we had not.

This was a new species for me and i was over the moon to get it.

Next fish i want is a nice pollock.

These are good for eating according to the fishing programme i was watching this morning.
