Anti foul (ing)

Morning fellow boat boys,

It's that time of year (although admittedly it's been 2 years since I last anti fouled Wicked Jack! dreadful I know!) and I'm needing some advice on where to get my AF from. Any suggestions?

Also, do people recommend sanding back to the original skin of the boat, or just roughing the current coat up and painting over it? I suspect it's the former but just wanted to make sure.

One final question, I'm after a decent filleting board that I can attach to one of the small grab rails on the side of the boat, I'm sure some of you will know what i mean when I say it's an attempt to save my back! I've looked at the Bison and Rail Blazer ones which do look good, just wondering if anybody has any other suggestions?

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Dave

I just antifould mine and got it off ebay, saved about £20 on chandlers prices.

Scrape off any loose old antifoul, lightly sand the old coat and then paint over with the new stuff. Try and re-do it every year if you can, with standard antifoul...:)

Dave,

I'm moored about 20 yards from Wicked Jack. Used Plastimo white AF 2 years ago and was OK last year, just wiped soft deposit off with sponge and pressure hose, no hard stuff. I'll decide in March about applying more AF but I don't fancy crawling about on the gravel again. The only advice I can add is to make sure the stuff you are applying is compatible with stuff that's already there or the whole lot falls off.... the best brand?..recommend something strongly radioactive if I could get hold of it!

Some boat owners who don't AF, they just make sure they clean the hull a couple of time a year. A mate of mine got away with this until he missed a couple of years due to illness, the boat got a mild attack of barnacles which had to be taken off with wet and dry, so something nasty does lurk in the marina!

+1 exactly what I did

Hello Dave,

First time around we sanded lightly removing any loose stuff before putting the new antifoul on but it didnt last long before it started to come off.

Second time around we sanded it down again then undercoated before applying the antifoul. This seemed to work a lot better.

We always put 2 coats of antifoul on but would recommend a third around the waterline as this seems to be the area that goes first.

Guess it just depends what / how it was put on before you got it.

Not a job me and Graham looked forward to!!

A bit of old carpet is always handy as well if you are doing the work in the marina.

Lying on the gravel all day isnt much fun.

I did mine a few weeks back, but i used my mates pit in his garage, i think if i'd started it outside lying on my back, i would have thrown the towel in :D

luxury chris, last time i antifouled my last boat i was dodging the dog turds whilst on my back on the gravel stones.
