had a mate put an outboard into Power House Marine,About 5 months ago and was well pi~~ed around, asking for more money, with no guarantee that it would be fixed, just wondering if this is a normal practice???

depends what was wrong with it, was it old ? are the parts difficult to get, was the problem big or ongoing

how did you mate communicate with them ?

what exactly have they done ?

If i put an outboard in to be fixed at any marine engineers, i would want to know a max price, and for them to notify me of any variations from that price before undertaking the extra work.....If its taken 5 months to sort a problem out, then thay arent worth a toss....:o
Intermittent faults can be a pain, but asking for more money and no guarantee is crap, sound like an episode of "Builders fron Hell" :o:D

I found it difficult to get a price from them for a straightforward 1st service on a 1 year old Yamaha, I can understand it on an old engine with problems , but they refused to give a fixed price saying it would be "around" £X . Of course when the bill came it was £50 more than they said, I queried it and got it reduced. It's not the way I do business or like to have done to me and it stinks of rip off but I have no choice because I was stupid enough to buy a Yamaha without first checking where I could get it serviced:(
What I will say is their engineer was spot on, I stayed with him whilst he serviced my engine and watched the whole process which was very thorough.
The engine is a beaut as well, just a shame there's no competition in the area to service it.
Another 7 or 8 months before I have to worry about it again, I had the run in service done by bosuns locker who are quite willing to give a quote , but the travel expenses they need for coming down from Edinburgh make them too expensive, I see the chandlers on the coast ( forget their name) road are starting to sell Yamaha , hopefully they will become main dealers and give powerhouse some competition.

tich. It happen to me last year, exactly the same. Mine was an intermittent electrical problem that they half identified, but saying that if it wasn't that, I would still have to pay for the £400 part and the labour. They spent a long time "testing" everything over around 2 months, and when I decided this was going nowhere, took it home with a £480. bill paid for their efforts:question::question:
I took it to a chap in Whitley Bay, took one look at it and said, I can fix that, lifted the cowl off, pulled the flywheel off expossing the stator, identified the the stator as "shot", fitted a second hand one, started it up, and wow! job done, all in the space of 90 minutes.
So I would personally give them a wide birth and go elsewhere.

aye, it was an old engine, that had an overheating problem , but just kept asking for more and more cash, without a guarantee of fixing it, heard the one on the coast rd is very expensive, still a lesson learned , cheers lads
