I didn't think my first trip off of the season would be on board a charter boat but whilst down here on my holidays one of my friends I used to work with suggested it to have a go at the Dhufish which taste amazing! This was the boat pulling up to the wharf to pick us up.
She was a big boat and designed along an Australian crayfish boat lines I think.
Once on board it was a cooked brekky for all with eggy bread and bacon, here's my mate Jacob troughing his:
The style of the fishing was using the provided alvey rods and reels coupled with some heavy duty terminal tackle on the bottom.
On arrival at the first mark the wind was a bit fresher than forecast and made for a lively sea!
The fishing was steady away, one Dhufish was landed in the first hour and I managed a new species of wrasse. I was thinking typical at that point, all this way to catch a bloody wrasse, coupled with the alvey reel being a bit different to a lever drag multiplier!
The next excitement was a moray eel being caught quickly followed by a port Jackson shark.
The sea conditions were proving too much for the lad next to me and he starred shouting for Ralph and Huey! At that point he got a good take and proceeded to land a Dhu'y!
The skipper tried all over and with the same result, a few small fish of varying species. He tried one last drift before we headed in and I felt a good take, I gave the fish a bit of line To swallow the bait then struck into it.
After a good fight I landed this fella:
I was over the moon to get my first ever Dhu fish.
On return to port the crewman knocked up steak and sasauge sarnies which I consumed once the motion had eased a fair bit!
Hopefully out in Jacobs boat on Tuesday targeting snapper.
