Is anyone else watching / did you watch the Ark Royal coming in to the Tyne? Live Webcam ~ Mouth of Tyne
She turned up on AIS at 13:00 then spot on time at the piers. Heading up the river with the crew lining the decks and jump jets on the launch ramp, it was quite a sight and I'm sure will pull in the crowds this weekend.

I agree with that..maybe a few miles further south so we can both fish her, would make a good pollack wreck in a couple of years times when the sea life takes hold of her, mind she have to go down on her side as it would not feel right bouncing over the flat deck and not gettign snagged...unless they left the planes on her :)

just out of curiosity:question: how long, does any know does it take for a sunken vessel to start supporting/harbouring our wee pals that we go hunting for:question:

I guess that fish would move in pretty quickly. Once a wreck is on the seabed it will provide shelter from currents and cover for smaller fish that the big ones will seek out.
Boats stored afloat without anti-foul get gunged up over only a summer and will soon have marine growth on them At depths where there is less sunlight, plant growth will be slower and may not provide as much in the way of food for the smaller fish and fish food.

:(:(Saw her heading in to the piers as I was driving along the sea front. She looked ghostly in the fog and a formidable sight. Sad to see her scrapped, as I was to sea the last Ark Royal in a disassembled state at Stranraer.

Funny you should say that Arthur, i was up there at that time, they had set fire to the inside of her to get rid of all the timber etc before cutting her up. I remember looking up and thinking how massive it was. Must have been around 1979-80 at Cairnryan. Oh and by the way i had one Dogfish on that trip and was bad with the drink for 2 days, Ahh the good old days...:)

I've seen a documentary where a vessel was deliberately sunk to research this question. Within a couple of months they came back and it was teeming with life...

Can't help but feel a twinge of sadness as an ex-matelot...anyone know which vessel will take over mantle as Flagship??

Just hope it's not the O'Boat as that's a mackem vessel :p:D;)

From friends still in there is a rumour it may get a reprieve. but unfortunately the flagship will go to senior officer afloat which could be Ocean.

I remember them well Chris, we used to fish for conger right under the jetty at Cairnrian as they were cutting her up in my old Mk1 Reiver 15ft. Long time ago now.:):)

Back in her home port before she is turned into Nissan cars or road side signs...sad times

Its disgusting they are going to pull this ship apart to save a few quid.

Then we can agree with our bezzy mates the French to borrow their carriers if we ever need one.

Remember The Falklands when they (French) contiued to sell exocet missiles to the Argies.

Good plan -Cameron :yltype:

Because of the issues of the Falklands i am shocked they will be removing our platform to attack them when we start removing millions of gallons of oil, our air field would not take much knocking out.
