bait mussell or muscells???????????

hi all, bad time of year for bait especialy my favourite bait lug,is anyone fishing with mussel and if so are you getting anything with it.i tend to think it is an underated forgotten bait but on its day can be realy good i realy like to fish with it frozen on hooks fishes better this way for me i think if it was,nt for the ease of using other baits mussle would probaly be used more,crab and mussell what a mouthful mixed how could a cod resist might even be the way to stop the whiting pestering your bait if you are pulling whiting in your bait is not out thre for the cod all the best to everyone regards john

Use mussell a lot mate especially when fishing St.Marys Island ,big ball baits ,always gets a bite or two, never without it in the freezer.

hi steve, does the mussell not go soft when using it out of the freezer ,have you had much on it this year,just been given about 2lb of it today got a bit left over lug could mix lug and mussle and tie it on hooks and freeze it regards john

Aye John ,got a four pounder yesterday ,using mussel in the cocktail ,it was part frozen so ideal for whipping on.

hi steve, not bad a four pounder cant remember the last time i saw i cod on my local beach.fished hartley skeer a few years back looked good lost fish on frozen crab dont realy know st marys well, talking to bob gasgoinge a couple of years ago it was in the summer and he says the s/w corner is a good shot in the summer for wrasse and red codling,fished thereonce very bad bottom regards john

Not fished that bit myself ,usually Crisps gulley ,short lob and a good fish holding gulley ,spoke to Bob myself a while back just passing when he was fishing a comp on the river , hey what a nice bloke.

Mussel has got to be one of the most underated baits available, easy to get hold of, easy to use, you can refreeze it with no adverse affects, used as a cocktail with crab it can be a killer bait.
I think its better to let it go off a bit, leave it outside for a day or two so a few die off and start to rot, stinks to high heaven but the fish seem to like it.
Put a lump the size of your fist on the hook and wrap it in a large squid, fasten it tight with bait elastic and you have got a great bait for large cod.
Only my opinion but it seems to work for me.

Mussel ?......brilliant bait.

Used with lug & squid it\'s THE perfect Winter bait IMHO.

Stocked up on 8lb of fresh mussel before Christmas - well at only £1.30 a pound, it\'s well worth stocking up on....lol

Don\'t find any problems with freezing them (or even re-freezing them)....yes they can go a bit \"soft\" if you re-freeze them and they don\'t \'alf whiff when they thaw. However, as Tala says, the smell does seem to act as an advantage....and they whip on to the hook just as well as the fresh ones.

hi tc,might give it a go refreeze them if any left over just my freezer has packed in thermostat acting up lost bait yet again got a new one coming in new year, i like to freeze mussells on the hook as they stay on great for distance castingand also might be wrong on this but just my theory it takes longer for the crabs to pinch because it takes i bit longer for them to get off the hook with them taking a while to defrostthanks for crack regards john

IMO Mussell are a great bait BUT....... Be aware that if you\'re buying it all sorts of nonesense can be done to it before you get your plump little bagged up cod oysters. Mussell seems to be sold in a similar way to the fruit we get in supermarkets. The clean and tidy pumped up specimens look nice and sell well. It\'s very rare that you get real, orange, bearded, limping mussels. That\'s what they look like straight out of the shell. Unsteamed / un-heated / rehydrated.

I get mine from a local fishmonger, Ell.....still alive and in the shell (the mussels, that is....not the local fishmonger). Excellent quality.

Has anyone ever heard of clammydos? (or something like that),
if so, how do you get hold of any? I have been told they are very big mussels.(not sure tho)
