1st time on site,i only get to fish when i come home to south shields,i've been carp fishing for a few years now,and i'm trying to use some of my carp fishing knowledge to sea fishing. i know some baits are better than others e.g.peeler etc, but i can't get my head around that a fish will not pick up a well presented bait,surely a hungry fish would not refuse a rag or lug or even a strip of mackeral,it's natural food ,all predatory fish are opportunist feeders, any comments would be welcome

I dont think its that a fish will refuse your bait, but a big smelly bait is more likley to attract the fish. One rag worm wont give the same amount of scent as a squid or crab bait. My thoughts anyways

I often wonder that same point.
Unless there is a huge amount of food then a fish will take anything surely as long it is in its usual diet

as there are less fish inshore now,and ther is the same amount of natural food will that mean fish can be more selective or are they just greedy gets that will eat owt in front of them

two year a go i got a 3 lber on one small lug worm as i was running out of bait. i think if the fish are there and hungry they will take any think.

it,s all about putting a scent trail out in to the sea .cod are scavengers and will eat anything when on the feed ,from hard back swimming crabs to rotten rag worm ,our problem is trying to find out what bait are the cod attracted too.ever smelt fresh peeler or runnydown to our noses not a lot scent to a cod dinner time.yet rotten razor clam as a bait can be just as effective, one of the great mysteries of our sport.

take the peeler crab situation.and the worm.
there are blyth crab,silloth ( west coast ) crab. tyne crab and welsh crab oh and scottish crab .then crab from doon south.
fish cambois beach and bigman will vouch for this,blyth crab will outfish tyne crab,they say welsh crab is the best you can get,but silloth is a good crab bait.why do fish seam to take a preference to a crab from a certain area.
it must be the same with worm bait,you cant get any better than harbour dug rag v farmed rag.
the same for lug , boulmer is an out for out lug bait compared to other lug baits.
now what about the whiteworm does it actually make any difference to catching fish or is it that you feel more comfotable with them.
i take this ever optamistic aproach if you feel good about what you use then you will catch fish.if you arent then you dont.fish will eat whats in front of them but you need to present the bait in a certain way.and have a little bit of lady luck shinning down on you.
then theres talk about feremouns and that it is that that makes the fish feed in a frencee.???????

Welcome to nesa.

You mention being a carp angler. A trip to any tackle show will show just how many different baits there are for carp...literally hundreds of different types, flavours, sizes etc.

Far more choices of bait than there are different rigs to present them correctly.

In sea angling the opposite is probably the case, a limited number of baits with hundreds of different rigs, tides and conditions to present them in.

In my opinion in both cases the correct bait is the one you feel confident using regardless of the rig. In the case of sea fishing that rig choice is far more complecated because of the changing conditions at each place and during each hour.

There is no definative answer, which for me is part of the challenge of fishing. Three years ago I would have said that all sea fishing involved was chucking any old bait out into the sea and providing a fish was around it would grab it. Having now learned a lot more about sea fishing this is clearly not the case and its very clear that consistantly succesful sea anglers out there are the ones who can get all the variables right (ie, tide,bait,rig,time) the majority of the time.

The encouraging thing for all is that there is always the element of chance that means we always have a chance of a fish of a lifetime.

My personal opine is that Cod are the saline equivalent of the Carp...anagram of Carp is Crap...and that is what Cod will eat, as will Carp...if it's in front of them and they are feeding they will eat it.

Just my humble opine...but the trick is finding the Cod/Carp when they are feeding and present the bait in their general direction
