Basics for a charter trip...?

Hi Boat Anglers,

I'm a shore angler. What I know about boat fishing could be written on a fag pack.... So, could some kind person please give me a list of the basics that I will need for a few trips out on charter boats this summer?
I'm thinking of a couple of trips out of Tyne or Amble when back for holidays. Happy to buy some second hand gear and terminal tackle cos I want to get into it a bit. What would be a good starting point?

Many thanks for any help and keep posting - it's great to see some proper fish caught,

Ross:D

A tld 15 reel about £75 new or £45-£50 second hand

A 15-30lb max boat rod none roller around £45 new

Braid 50lb i would go for fireline but you can get some cheap as chip's chinese stuff that is supposed to be good also £10-30

A pack of shads £5

hand full of 8-12oz pirks

A few cod daylights or hokki's

A couple packs of mackerel daylights

Hook sizes 5/0-7/0 singles or trebles

A hand full of single hook flowing traces (simple and strong)

A hand full of 8-10oz leads

That will get you started.

Good list that.

about sums up my gear.

Thanks for the list, that's great.

I've got an old Abu9000 multiplier that I use as a back-up for rock fishing - could that be teamed with the boat rod and loaded with braid? Are other shore multipliers (Penn525 etc) ok on the boats?

Cheers

i regularly used abu 9000,with braid for my boat fishing rock solid reel that does the job fine.might be worth having it serviced before boat use:)

take one of your lighter shore reels for emergency:exclam:

Obviously, I'll have a good chat with the skipper about this, but is the general idea that in a long trip (like 8hrs) you go to wrecks and fish with pirks and lures and then go to rough ground and bait fish with the flowing traces?

Cheers...

We have been on Warlord out of Amble and Mistress out of the Tyne. You won't go far wrong on these boats. Try a weekday first if you can, when they are maybe not full. We were total amateurs(some on here will swear I still am!) and have had a blast over the last 3 years.

I found Penn525 too light on the boat to be honest.

For Summer fishing fish/squid baits plus shads/hokkais etc usually work well, wreck or ground.

Take the plunge(not literally), but be prepared for getting "hooked" like we did!

Just wondering why a none roller tip?

Briad can get down the side and jam, over kill for our waters, why have one anyway?, rust up easy and stops rolling causing grooves in the roller more.

Can you tell i hate them :)

:D:D:D roller tip:o:o:o:o:o

roller tips fail, screws come out, they seize up they wear and the roller aint supported, letting line jam down the sides, especially braid.

also they tend to be fitted to heavier class rods. apart from those things they fine:D:D:D:D

Was just asking as i have the ugly stik with a roller tip only used a couple of times but have a new boat reel loaded with braid, Can roller tips be changed for a normal tip or just best off buying a new rod?

Yer easy and cheap to change say £5 but if your happy using it i always say stick with what you are happy with.

I have roller tips on my skate rods but thats because the normal tip cant take the pressure on the same spot for ages so the roller does it job.

Used this several times here and elsewhere but this is how I fish :)

Gear required:
60lb mono for 99% of all rigs you will tie yourself
6/0 – 10/0 hooks for flowing traces. 6/0 for inshore Cod’ing – 10/0 for big Ling baits (and sometime Cod)
X Large 3 Way Swivels for making the flowing traces
Hokkais: 3/0 to 6/0
Daylites: Size 1 to 7/0
Other shop bought boat rigs – fill yer boots with whatever takes your fancy
Shads – can be fished in exactly same way as flowing trace
Pirks – don’t forget you will prob also need large treble and split ring
Weights – 10/12oz (same for Pirks)
X Large Snap Link Swivels for quick changing of rigs
20lb Class Rod
50lb Braid
Large Multiplier Reel (with lever drag if budget allows)
You can buy cheaper stuff to start off with but if you get into it you’ll sharp want to upgrade – my first boat rod lasted about half a dozen trips before I upgraded

General Boating tips:

Always take a waterproof/windproof layer
Always take something to eat and drink
Always take a hat
Always have suncream in your tackle box
Try and stay off the pop the night before a trip
Always have something to eat before a trip
Always go to the loo before a trip (not just a tinkle either if you get my drift)

Fishing tips:

If bait fishing keep the lead hard on the bottom – this may mean letting line out to do so, I generally leave the reel in free spool and thumb out line as required…only engaging the clutch when a fish takes.

Hokkais/Large Daylites etc can be fished bare but if being plagued by mackerel tip off the hooks with large chunks/strips of bait

Pirks – use a mono “leader” this can be a hokkai/daylite trace or a length of plain mono. If fishing with braid this means that in theory you should just lose the pirk at the mono “weak link”

Don’t be afraid to mix it up – if the fish aren’t taking hokkais try something else…

Slinky Kate tips:

Always carry a camera
Always have a smile on your face
Always enjoy the fishing regardless :D

Check if its a braid type first if it is no need to remove it, as if it is a braid type then it wont trap
